Kayaking? 2007/06/17 20:02 Karma: 0
My boyfriend is huge on Kayaking... and just about any other sport that involves massive quantities of water. However I have never been Kayaking before in California, and I don't even know where a good place to go kayaking would be in nevada county.
So, I am looking for a kayaking place that one can get to from alta sierra without taking 80. (sorry, I hate driving 80, it scares me)

Are you looking for a place to flatwater kayak or whitewater kayak?

If you are looking for a great place to flatwater kayak, I highly recommend Sugar Pine Reservoir near Foresthill. Not only is it great for paddling, but there is a 3.5-mile trail around the lake for hiking, biking and running. Camping is also available, with great swimming as well. Dogs are welcome too, which is one reason it is one of my favorite places!

Another one of my favorite places to paddle is Lake Clementine. See my post under "Day Trips."

If it is whitewater kayaking locations you are seeking, visit http://www.riverfacts.com/ranges/15_Northern_Sierra_Nevada.html.

Happy paddling!

Sherri

Thanks for the tips. Scots flat is actually not far from where I work.. But i'm still open for suggestions.

Sugar Pines sounds really nice, and their dog friendly quota would be great because he just got a puppy. Sadly I don't know where we'd put the dogs when going kayaking... Unless dogs like to kayak... but i don't think they do.

...either way I'm tempted to see how a dog would react to being on a kayak....

BrennaM, my initial reaction was that I didn't think kayaks were dog friendly and that a canoe would be a better choice for pets. What I had in mind was a river kayak that is really built for just one person.

But this got me thinking and of course I wanted to provide a good source of information. So here is a link for you that provides a ton of information about kayaking with dogs...

BrennaM,

What I really meant about "dog friendly," is that Sugar Pine allows dogs, verses some places like Lake Clementine that don't. Since we take our dog with us nearly everywhere we go, we are always looking for "dog friendly" locations.

For paddling (canoeing or kayaking), Lake Clementine is really hard to beat, however. Every now and then (I may next week), we leave the dog behind for a great paddle on Lake Clementine. Lake Clementine is a long narrow lake, with very warm water. If you paddle at the upper end, you can have a quiet, smooth paddle. Paddling the length of the lake, will get you out there with the ski boats.

Regarding Scott's Flat, I've been there before, but not to paddle. I think it might be harder to have a smooth paddle, but since I have never done it, I'm not sure. Why don't you check it out and report back. Also, find out about dog rules.

Do dogs like to kayak? Sure they do. They like to canoe too. We do both! Which is easier? It's a toss up. In a canoe, the dog has more room to move about. But, a kayak is much more stable than a canoe.

Here is a photo of my husband and dog Cocoa kayaking at Lake Faucherie (another awesome paddle).

Craig,

Thank you for the great information on kayaking with your dog. I'm surprised I haven't come accross that site before!
