Tom McClintock’s 15 point victory last night over Doug Ose was not only a victory for taxpayers and voters in the 4th, but a referendum embracing small, conservative government and limited taxation over the opposite. This race was the 2nd most expensive congressional primary in United States history!
Come November, Mr. McClintock will beat Mr. Brown by at least the margin he beat Mr. Ose by – 15 points. The trick for Tom’s campaign now is to overcome negatives relating to veteran’s issues incurred as a result of Ose’s scurrilous mud slinging. However if these attacks did not resonate with voters while Ose was making them in the primary, why would they resonate when Brown makes them in November’s general?
More interesting to us political types though are the winners and losers in this race, aside from the obvious of Tom and Doug respectively.
We saw just about every elected official in Placer & EDC counties come out for Ose – some stronger than others. Amongst Doug’s most adamant supporters (and thus biggest losers) we have EDC’s own District Attorney, Vern Pierson. Vern is astute and normally good on things like this, but not this time. He was critical of Tom’s senate votes “against veterans” on several prominent radio and tv ads. This will not bode well for his future political aspirations, which are alive and well.
Lew & Kirk Uhler – unlike Vern, these two, particularly Kirk, are less than astute and often on the wrong sides of issues, and this race was no exception. Lew’s National Tax Limitation Committee (which is normally right on!) did a mailer for Doug in return for the $100k Doug donated to his committee. Talk about selling out – Lew’s committee espouses limited taxation and individual freedoms and here it is supporting a candidate that voted for tax hikes. Also Kirk told a sitting Assemblyman that had endorsed Tom that “he was wrong and should rethink his endorsement.” Talk about eating your words.
Governor Pete Wilson is another big loser. With his high profile rebuke of McClintock, he not only broke Reagan’s 11th Commandment, but in many ways, sealed the deal for Tom. Voters remember Wilson raised VLF & sales taxes while Tom was in the senate. Recall Pete’s recent comments: “I could never count on Tom while I was in office…” – well of course Tom was not going to vote for his tax increases, hence Pete’s inability to count on Tom as a “team player.”
Bruce Kranz also another big loser. Not only did Bruce’s boy Doug lose big, but Bruce didn’t get his 50 % + 1 and now will be in a runoff with Jennifer Montgomery. Bruce’s own staffers are McClintock backers. As a result of Bruce’s political decisions over the past year, he is finding himself in hot political water with few willing to bail him out.
Unfortunately, many of our local elected leaders made the wrong decision in this race, for the wrong reasons (full endorse list at bottom). As a result of placing politics ahead of principle they now find themselves in precarious positions. With the exception of a few individuals, the McClintock campaign will begin to outreach to their former detractors in preparation for Charlie Brown in November. My prediction is we will see about two thirds of former Ose supporters transition into the McClintock camp, with the remaining third remaining neutral or tacitly supporting Brown.
Big winners in this race include Assemblymen Gaines, Keene & Senator Aanestead. These three respected leaders endorsed Tom early on and continued to support him throughout the 90 day slug fest. As a result, they received plenty of cheap shots, especially Gaines. Several electeds within Gaines’ own district including Senator Cox and Supervisor Uhler took it upon themselves to tell Mr. Gaines how misguided he was for supporting Tom and that he should rethink his decision. Looks like a pretty good decision to me. The charge now is for all of us republicans to unite under a single banner, discourage petty political in-fighting and send a clear message by destroying Charlie Brown in November.
