Silver Screen Classic Movie (2:00PM - 11:59PM)
AUGUST 2
THE 39 STEPS

Alfred Hitchcock explores a favorite theme: the innocent man who stumbles into trouble. Accused of murder and handcuffed to Madeleine Carroll, Robert Donat struggles to outwit the cops while he hunts for a treacherous cadre of spies. "Zippy, punchy, romantic... The entertainment holds like steel cable from start to finish." --Variety. 1935

"One thing he cannot disguise -- this: half of his little finger is missing. So if ever you should meet a man with no top joint there, be very careful."--Ill-fated spy telling ill-fated Robert Donat -- and us -- how to recognize the bad guy.

2008 marks the 12th year of great classic movies In Auburn, California. Once a month in the Auburn Library's Beecher Room, celebrate the golden age of the silver screen.

Romance and adventure, comedy and dance, mystery and music --it's another year of classics from Silver Screen! These movies resonate with great stories and great actors, such as Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis, Laurence Olivier and Spencer Tracy -- and great directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock and George Stevens.

After 50, 60, even 80 years, these movies continue to amaze, delight, and entertain. The stars continue to gleam in the dark on the silver screen.

Join us as we continue to honor an age long gone but fondly remembered.

Presented by the Auburn Library, the movies are shown at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Beecher Room of the library, at 350 Nevada St. in Auburn. Admission is free.

Annual Reptile Fair at Placer Nature Center Saturday, August 9, 10am-12pm

Placer Nature CenterSome of the most fascinating creatures on earth will visit the Placer Nature Center on August 9th from 10AM to 12PM. Some of these creatures can hear without ears, move without legs, change colors and shed their skin, they can’t close their eyes and some have over 200 teeth! The Annual Reptile Fair offers a fun, hands-on approach to learning why these little creatures are more scared of us then we should be of them.

Numerous groups and individuals will be on hand to share and teach about their precious snakes, lizards, turtles and geckos. Participants will get to learn about handing, care, feeding and even how to choose your own reptile as a pet.

All the Nature Center’s exhibition halls will be open for viewing and exploration including the Main Exhibit Hall and WaterShed Learning Center, Discovery Lab, Maidu Village, Demonstration Garden and The Nature Shop.

Placer Nature Center, a private 501(c) (3) nonprofit, is open to the public and maintains miles of trails on their 60-acre campus. Programs offered for preschoolers to adults, scouts and other groups, astronomy classes, environmental lectures and seasonal workshops.

KIM PALAFERRI TO SHOW AT MONKEY CAT RESTAURANT (6:00PM - 11:59PM)

Auburn photographer, Kim Palaferri, will participate in the Auburn Art Walk presented by the PlacerArts on Thursday, August 14, 2008, from 6-9 p.m.
A selection of Kim’s most recent work, including local images of nature and sports, as wells a sample of her active portraits, will be available for show and tell, and sale.
Palaferri’s passion for photography is driven by how holding the camera and viewing objects through a lens forces her to be right in the moment with her subject, that artistic tension.  She explains, “There are times when I’m out shooting, and I know it’s good. It’s just a feeling I have, that this one is going up on my wall.  When that happens, I cannot wait to get home and get it into the computer.”  The artist also says, “‘The World Through My Eyes,’ by Depeche Mode is one of my favorite songs, and its title sums up what photography is—a chance for others to see what I see, from the perspective I see it.”
To experience Kim’s work online, and see the world through her eyes, visit her website at kimpalaferri.com.  For more information call Kim Palaferri at
(530) 913-9335.  Brochures for the Art Walk are available at local businesses and the PlacerArts office, 808 Lincoln Way, Auburn, California, or call (530) 885-5670.
