Sierra College will present a lecture by historian Dan DeFoe entitled "Gold, Granite, and Grit: A Quarry, A Town, and the Building of California" on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at 7 p.m. The presentation is sponsored by the Sierra College Friends of the Library.

The history of the granite industry in Rocklin is long and illustrious. Beginning in the 19th century, Rocklin has had dozens of quarries providing granite for many construction projects, such as the California State Capitol, the U.S. Mint in San Francisco, and even materials for the breakwater at Pearl Harbor.

Lecture will include documentary film

In this lecture, Professor Dan DeFoe examines this remarkable story. The presentation will also feature the showing of DeFfoe’s documentary film “Gold, Granite, and Grit: A Quarry, A Town, and the Building of California,” which examines the economic and social impact of the industry on Rocklin.

Dan DeFoe is Professor of History and Communication Studies at Sierra College. He has been at the Rocklin campus since 1990. He has been named Sierra College “Teacher of the Year” on nine occasions. Prior to joining the faculty, Dan was employed for many years in the television and advertising industries and earned multiple awards for his work.

Location

The lecture will be on the first floor of the Library/Learning Resource Center in Room 133A (Sierra College Boardroom) on the Sierra College-Rocklin Campus. The campus is located at 5000 Rocklin Road in Rocklin. The public is invited and an admission donation of $5 is suggested. Parking permits are required and may be purchased for $1 at campus parking permit dispensers.
