Much improved from past visits,  Monday, 12 November 2007 They really have improved on the food & service quality, on a recent visit even the busgirl (named "Allie") was smiling and seemed to be enjoying her job.

 Still the best Fruit Basket Cake in Auburn,  Monday, 12 November 2007 Hilda's was recently purchased by a new owner.
Fortunately, they have not tinkered with the old recipes. Everything is as wonderfully yummy (and fattening) as always.

 Great value, and they're open Monday/Tuesday,  Monday, 12 November 2007 Although I've got to be honest: Katrina's is better chow, that's a fact.

On the plus side for "Breakfast Club", they are open on Mondays and Tuesdays (the two days I like to go out for breakfast!).

Another plus is the Entertainment Coupon (hint hint).

Overall, I've got to give "Breakfast Club" a slight nod over Katrina's for the above two considerations.

 Still a great value and a one-of-a-kind experience,  Monday, 12 November 2007 The Ponderosa is a throwback to kinder and gentler times, right down to the old fashioned jukebox filled with C/W tunes from a bygone era.

Our fondest memories of early foothill wandering was stumbling on to the Ponderosa after a long day of rafting/bridge jumping on the nearby North Fork of the American river.

Still family owned and operated by the Velicans, the Ponderosa has down-home grub with reasonable prices.

Highly recommended if you're in Weimar, Colfax, Applegate, or traveling on I-80 and looking for an out-of-the-way place that is easy on the pocketbook.

Best bets are the Chicken Wing appetizer, the Pork Chop platter, and the gargantuan steaks.

 Best Breakfast-Lunch Place (Weds. thru Sun. only),  Monday, 12 November 2007 Despite the cramped quarters with diners literally elbow-to-elbow, Katrina's is a great place for Breakfast & Lunch. They close at 2 pm, so don't be late! And if its Mondays or Tuesdays,they're closed and you can visit "Auburn Breakfast Club" (about 2 blocks away).

 Excellent Indian Buffet in Auburn CA,  Thursday, 16 August 2007 I keep forgetting to visit this wonderful resource for ethnic cuisine in Auburn, Ca. According to a friend who spent time in Nepal, their "Panaak Paneer" is the best he's ever tried. Unfortunately, that dish is not always on the lunch buffet menu.
My wife's favorite is the lamb curry. Their basmati rice is incredible. What a great deal, two people can travel 1/2 way around the world and eat authentic Nepalese and Indian food (as much as they can consume) for less than $20.

Note: the reason I say not "Kid Friendly" is because OUR kid does not like anything containing curry spices. I think it would be fine if YOUR kid is open minded about spicy cuisines!!!

 a poor excuse for Mexican Food,  Sunday, 17 June 2007 Expensive, overpriced, Mexican Food for Gringos who have progressed from Taco Bell to Taco Tree and want to go to the next level (bland, mediocre, corporate).

Chevy's used to be decent chain Mex food, back in the late 80's thru early 90's. Now its just a bad imitation of a Mexican restaurant. (Hint: Try EL PORTAL TAQUERIA--- better service, better food and better prices!)

 Worst example of a "Corporate" chain restaurant,  Wednesday, 06 June 2007 Applebee's is the McDonalds of corporate chain restaurants. They spend the most money on TV advertising, percentage-wise, than any non fast-food restaurant. Everything on the menu contains MSG, even the salad dressings. And the food is worse than Marie Callendars, which is pretty bad.

 All the dishes look/taste the same,  Wednesday, 06 June 2007 This has got to be one of the worst chinese buffets I've ever been to. My wife noticed how glossy every dish is (shiny from the MSG).
Its run-of-the-mill chinese cafeteria food.

 Finally, some competition for Twin Dragon!!!,  Wednesday, 06 June 2007 I think Chang's is better than Twin Dragon. However, my wife & daughter disagree with me, preferring the latter. Overall, I feel that Chang Brothers is an improved dining experience, largely due to having better quality of service. The lunch specials rock! This side of town desperately needed a new chinese restaurant.....long live Chang Brothers!
