Andy, owner of Andy's Barber Shop in Auburn, CA.......has a "Master Barber" credential.....a type of licence which is rarely found in CA....

Andy has BOTH a cosmetology licence and the barber licence....I believe this makes him more creative than most barbers. The shop is decorated with sports memorabilia, so you can watch your favorite sporting events from the comfort of your barber chair.

I've noticed a huge amount of appreciation shown by my wife, due to Andy's haircuts. She declares that Andy is the best hair cutter to cut my hair.... in the nearly 20 years we've been under the same roof..... HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

My wife has been going to Kristi, owner of Pizazz, for over 10 years now.

Kristi is a lot of fun, she's got a great shop with a lot of personality. Maybe that's why this is the most popular Hair Salon on this side of Auburn.

This is a full-service hair stylist and they also do color treatments for hair!
Very affordable and great service.

Pizazz is the top Women's Hair Salon in Auburn, CA.

I can't say enough about Golden Carpet Cleaners of Auburn CA---I've been using this company for over 15 years. During that time, we have had great service from Mike Vaughan (former owner) and Todd Haynes (new owner).

We have light beige carpets, and this can be a problem with the "red dirt" (that oxide-rich soil of the Sierra foothills).....but Golden Carpet Cleaners of Auburn has been able to get the stains out EVERY time!

I give this Carpet Cleaning Service my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

Arrow mechanical did the ductwork (mechanical) and heating & AC installation in our twenty-year-old Applegate home.

We were extremely pleased with the quality of this company's service, and we're very happy with our Trane Heating and Air Conditioning equipment. They now offer American Standard (the parent company of Trane), which is the same manufacturer (like GM, Chevy & Buick).

In the past two years, we've referred TWO of our neighbors to Arrow Mechanical for their Heating and A/C installs, and they all give them a big Thumbs Up. Their estimates usually come in for thousands less than Maki....I believe its because their overhead is lower.

If you're driving into the Sierra, on Interstate 80, heading up the hill for Lake Tahoe & skiing, why not stop at Sierra Market Deli for a picnic lunch.....their southern Fried Chicken is the best supermarket chicken I've ever tasted, and its very inexpensive (compared to KFC). For less than $2.50, you get a huge breast, a drumstick, and some fried potato wedges.........its called a "Snack Pack" --- but it will feed a very hungry person at lunch time. The deli sandwiches have 3x the meat of a Subway sandwich, and cost less!
The Sierra Market deli is one of the best kept secrets in Colfax. They stop cooking the chicken at 2:30 pm, and the deli closes at 5 pm.

The Furniture Bargain is an unassuming barn-like Mom & Pop furniture store in Auburn California.....its owned and operated by Danielle Bailey and her father, so its really a "Daughter & Pop" store....;)

What is truly amazing about this furniture store, is that they will not be undersold by anyone, even the "Big Box" stores like RC Willey....

We've furnished four whole rooms in our home at the Furniture Bargain...
Danielle (owner) is really helpful and if they don't have it on their floor, they can order it. Delivery is prompt and they are super courteous. I cannot say enough positive comments about the "Furniture Bargain"......Auburn's best furniture dealer and home furnishings store

When they stopped doing the "Happy Hour" (tempura & gyoza for $2 each, sake for $2)....Hapa Sushi no longer had any attraction for me.............You can get better sushi at MIZU (an all-you-can eat Sushi Buffet in Roseville) for less than $10.
My Restaurant Observations
Price Range: Moderate ($11 - $30)

Our family eats at El Portal at least TWICE a week. The average cost of a full meal is less than $10, and there are three persons in our family. Do the math, and you'll discover that we spend $240 per month at El Portal. Its my wife's and daughter's favorite restaurant in Auburn, CA. Did I mention that my wife was born in Zacatecas, Mexico (90 miles from Guadalajara). You would have to drive 1000 miles (to my wife's hometown) in order to find better Mexican food.

I've been eating at Max's at least once a month since I discovered it last year.
Max's Deli was nominated for "Best Cheap Eats - Sandwich & Deli" and came in a close second place to "Mr Pickle".

My favorite sandwiches include the "Number Six" (turkey & avocado on ciabatta) but the pastrami on rye is a close second.

Max's is not cheap, but you get a lot of value for the money. You'd have to fly to NYC (spending hundreds on airfare) to find a better sandwich.
