One More Big Box, please!
Posted by kjgraham in Untagged
As much as we all love the quaintness of our small community and the uniqueness of our privately owned mom and pop shops, I think most of us are happy to have a few new big chains to make our shopping easier. Yay for Home Depot! I&;ve only been there once so far, but both staff members that helped me were friendly, professional and competent. Thank you for great service and a user-friendly store layout -everything is where it&;s supposed to be! Another new store which opened recently is the Party Maker in the BelAir shopping center. Auburn needed a party supply store, in my opinion, and this one has done a great job. Owner is friendly and helpful and her inventory includes some neat items you can&;t even find at some of the big party stores down the hill (i.e. 14 inch balloons and party invitations in a bottle). Nice product offering and presentation - way to go. Make sure to stop in and check them out the next time you are planning a party! Now that we have parties, home improvement, office supplies , electronics , and liquor covered, there is just one thing missing (other than a Costco which may be on the way). Auburn needs a serious art supply/craft store like Michaels. Rite Aid has a small craft area and Dawn&;s Card Shop has art supplies, but it is impossible to find specialty items in large quantities without going down the hill. Anyone else agree? So, could we have just one more big box? Michael&;s or Beverly&;s would be great, please and thank you!

THOUGHTS IN A DRY SEASON
Posted by Loyce in Placer County, Gold Country Families, Gold Country, Community
Well I&;m poised and ready to shift with the re-alignment in lifestyle as our lives are impacted by all the changes the media has belabored. I&;ve decided to crank up the mirthmeter and continue with my NUKED UKES, having fun and camaraderie with other uke players at Frenchy&;s Noon on Sundays where we gather to nosh and practice and chatter away. Come one; come all and join the fun. We entertain at the care homes, on my KAHI radio program and this week we&;ll tape our performance at ACTV. Rock

Home Depot has arrived, Best Buy disappoints.
Posted by DJ MC in Untagged
Now that the new Big Box stores have been open for a while, its hard to say what impact these places have on the local economy.Granted, there were hundreds of jobs created. Less carbon emissions, due to less trips to the Flatlands for supplies.Best Buy has been a disappointment. Not very helpful and poorly trained sales staff. At least Home Depot did a good job of screening the best of the unemployed local contractors, and gave them jobs in the appropriate departments. Many of the aisles at HD are staffed by electricians, plumbers, etc. Another benefit is for Max at Max&;s Deli & Catering. I&;ve personally seen HD employees buying food at his restaurant. Hooray for Auburn! We just need a COSTCO and I&;ll die with a smile on my face

The Beach House
Posted by Spa Mama in Untagged
Every girl I know dreams about a beach house, the novelty of going to a hide away and planning adventures. Seeking the ideal adventures together with the one they love or alone.I have always been the one to think "alone" but always day dream about the hubby and kids being around.Being alone my family and friends never really let me do that, and that&;s ok too. I feel at peace with myself with many issue in my life but still desire to be alone when those moments come up.So with my idea of wanting to buy a beach house in California a true fixed upper. Or even a dilapidated old barn with charm. It has been my dream. A place to plant lavender, a vegetable garden, watch my sons grow and there kids come visit too, one of those beach houses. To be the first one on the beach in the morning for a morning run and see the day unfold in front of me. To really be there and smell all there is to smell with the big waves crashing at my feet. Yes this has been my dream.Playing foot ball, volley ball, sand castles, take long slow walks on the beach, fill your pockets with small shells that you can put in a glass jar in your kitchen window back home, relax, walk in the rain on the beach, hunt crabs on the beach at night, take photos on the beach, flying a kite, sitting on the beach watching a beautiful pink and orange sunset with margarita in-hand and my list of why I want a beach house goes on and on....LOLI know that a phase of my life is ending, one where the kids are at home and my Dad is gone, Mom living by herself in the house that I grew up in. The rhythm of my days and our holidays and our family is changing. I also know that these are very minor worries in the scheme of things and that I am fortunate to have these as my main concerns. But they still make me sad."The BEACH HOUSE" yes looking forward.............................I try not just to ready myself for the next part of the journey but to welcome it, and to move forward with a little bit of grace, and with thanks for what is

UPBEAT IN DOWNTOWN

Kudos to the Downtown Auburn businesses that are maintaining and managing and let me name a few stand-outs: Southwest Silver; The Book Haven; Frenchy&;s Cafe and Howard Stocks Hypnotherapist. All these businesses have made it past the three-year mark and some like Syl Bruce of SW Silver can claim decades of business. So, let&;s celebrate those plucky Downtown businesses who continue to provide services and inventory and even combine humor and friendly customer service. Yes, let&;s accentuate the positive in this new year. I&;m grateful to have choices in Auburn, grateful to live in Auburn and grateful to have this opportunity to be upbeat on The Buzz.

See Who Cares About the Environment With SeeImGreen.com by Indoor Sciences, Inc.CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - December 2, 2008) - Environmentally conscious people often wear buttons or display bumper stickers to show their green pride. A new website gives these people an innovative way to declare their support for the environment. SeeImGreen.com allows eco-enthusiasts to put a marker over their house on a map of the world. "Each user fills out a profile which includes a checklist of 60 green activities," says Ian Cull, President of Indoor Sciences, Inc. the owner of the website. "After filling out a profile, users will find a marker over their house on the map. Click on any of the markers on the website, and you can read users&; bios, advice to neighbors and a list of their green activities." Mr. Cull first came up with the idea for the website when wondering what his neighbors were doing, if anything, for the environment. "I wanted to create a site where I could see environmentally conscious neighbors, organizations, and businesses all on one map," explains Mr. Cull. "As a licensed environmental engineer specializing in green buildings, I&;m interested in knowing what resources are all around me." SeeImGreen.com includes discussion boards and social networking tools so users can communicate with other like-minded individuals. "We&;re hoping to attract both the lifelong environmental enthusiast and those just starting to go green. The website provides practical advice for anyone wanting to save energy, reduce waste, conserve water and have a healthier indoor environment," says Mr. Cull. The website is free for individuals and non-profit organizations but charges a nominal fee for businesses that either sell green products or have incorporated environmental sustainability into their practices. SeeImGreen.com uses Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) as the mapping platform. About Indoor Sciences, Inc. Indoor Sciences, Inc. is an indoor environmental training and consulting company based in Chicago, IL. The company specializes in indoor air quality, building science and green building consulting. The President, Ian Cull, currently serves as a Vice-President of the Indoor Air Quality Association.
