MANDELA

Very much enjoyed watching the movie Mandela and de Klerk, the story of Nelson Mandela played by the wonderful Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine as F.W. de Klerk. Of course the acting is excellent and the story is riveting and what a relief: No profanity or nudity. Unfortunately, because of the nature of apartheid/segregation, violence was depicted in a graphic manner--all offset by the stimulating conversations of Mandela and de Klerk in their attempts to end the violence [...]

Enjoyed an absolutely incredible meal at Giovanni's in Colfax where I dined in splendid excess with Hubby Jack--recuperating from knee surgery--and celebrated Stuart's Shurr's birthday with Wife Christina. I enjoyed every stitch of my dining experience from the tangy Bloody Mary to my tasty salad to my linguini with blackened prawns. And let me mention the crusty bread dipped in vinegar/oil. Living in Auburn for 20 years this October, I confess that it was Stu [...]

So enjoyed the experience today: Hosted Zoo-Keeper/musician Gary Bowman at KAHI where we cranked up the mirth meter by playing Bowman's new CD with animal sounds/theme. Bowman also shared his interesting background and talked about meeting Jane Goodall. On the golf program I chatted with Shawn Kelly, pro/instruction at The Ridge, about the short game and Kelly gave his opinions on golf etiquette. After the programs, we all headed over to Courthouse Coffee and joined T [...]

It is being said that 2008 is the beginning of a major shift in growth/change/upheaval and one can certainly appreciate the economic reality with higher gas prices, etc; but life does, hopefully, go on. Ran into good pal Syl Bruce as she headed over to Depoe Bay on High Street where I joined her and bumped into fellow golfer Donna Arz who was with Jack Bangs. While waiting for our order at this very busy coffee house, chatted with AJ columnist Susan Rushton whom Bruce brought up to s [...]

Post-program at Courthouse Coffee I was joined by the returning Liz Pope, golfer Spencer Strand and Diana Farr from The Ridge. It was good to see Liz and share golf stories with Spencer as we all talked about our golf experiences and ties with the community. No golf today or tomorrow but I am grateful for the rain and the quenching of the thirsty earth so will look forward to some play next week. Stopped by the Assistant League Thrift Shop on Hwy 49 in Auburn and was asked t [...]

Met KAHI Sales Manager Bob Ripley today for a pleasant lunch at The Monkey Cat in Downtown Auburn where we were told by owner Trish that husband Jim Bril is recovering from knee surgery and will return in a month. Bob and I enjoyed our fish tacos and appreciated the attentive service by the dark-haired waitress with the easy smile. Bob and I enjoyed our radio/community connections and agreed to connect again very soon. Best wishes, Jim, for a speedy recovery.

RAINMAKER MAGIC

Just finished watching a magical movie The Rainmaker starring Burt Lancaster, Kate Hepburn and Wendell Corey. Directed by Joseph Andrew, this movie makes you smile, big and wide, all the while being highly entertained by the wonderful performances--a film the individual and/or the family can watch without flinching. I'd give five stars to this wonderfully magic film and am grateful for these fine films that will live on and triumph over those films which have been produced with n [...]

It is being said by many that 2008 is the beginning of great change/shift; and I agree because there appears to be a greater intensity in energy and many are in flux or change. Friend Syl Bruce makes her transition in locating her 20-year business from Downtown Lincoln to the end of High Street where she should be located in March, ready to continue business as Southwest Silver; we wish her luck in navigating this latest challenge. Friend Linda Lareau, Owner of Courtho [...]

Determined to hold my own against the quirky forces which seems to be shifting the collective consciousness. Pleased with my choices in Auburn, I've been connecting with pals Spencer and Donna at The Ridge where divine splendor awaits. This week on KAHI CONNECTIONS, "the legend" jazz singer Cheri Murphy drops by to entertain and connect with our community at The Round Table at Courthouse Coffee. This morning I head out to Downtown Auburn to enjoy a tasty [...]

REGAINING THE MOMENTUM

It would seem that in January we are all off track from all the overeating and overspending in December and by February we collectively began to return to our regular habits, eating healthier and smaller portions and omitting the sweets (for the most part). I've finally found some momentum on the treadmill and Millie The Meek, the family dog, licked my hand in appreciation for the short, brisk walks I've recently taken her on. Seeing and feeling the sun makes for the impet [...]

NATURAL WONDERS

OK, I admit to ingesting meat products; I confess to my choice to fall into eating animals in the abstract; but I do see myself shifting more and more away from such and toward fish (OK, I know these were once living creatures). I do, however, have a great love and appreciation for those creatures of the wild including a pair of undomesticated felines and a miniature parrot and it pains me when I see brightly featured in the Sacramento Bee, photos of women holding the wild creatures of [...]

MAGIC IN MOVIES

Just enjoyed very much a movie titled The Gunfighter with Gregory Peck and while this tale is one of violence, I enjoyed the story which is depicted by the great Peck and guess what? This wonderful film is in black and white, has minimum killing, little graphic depiction of the violence, no profanity and yet the message is clear: Violence begets violence and man has a choice. The film is beautifully acted by Peck and supporting actors Mitchell Mallard and Helen Westcott ad [...]

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE

It is becoming more and more challenging to override those headlines about crime and I always turn the television channel when the violence goes over the top and I try to avoid those programs that splash profanity around. There really is much positive happening in the world because the world continues to spin and the sun rises and sets daily; so if we bear these realities in mind we can offset all the negatives that the media continues to deluge us with and we must remember that i [...]

I've heard from a few peeps that this year will bring about some interesting energies among the different celestial planets and thus, great shifts will take place. I am experiencing changes close to home in that my good friend Syl Bruce--after almost two decades in her Downtown Lincoln location--will be moving her shop to the end of High Street next to the former Sundance Computers which Alex and Thom Finks have recently shuttered. Look for Syl in her new location in Mar [...]

Although I have not yet experienced the fare at Joe Caribe, the newest eatery on Lincoln Way in Downtown Auburn, I have heard excellent feedback from those who have joined me at The Round Table and I look forward to savoring those "tasty tacos" as I seem to crave more spicy and zesty foods during these grey, winter days. And let me say that I continue to enjoy the good food at Lou La Bontes where I was joined the other day by pal Donna Arz and Jack Bangs. We all enjoyed our [...]
