Very much enjoyed watching the movie Mandela and de Klerk, the story of Nelson Mandela played by the wonderful Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine as F.W. de Klerk. Of course the acting is excellent and the story is riveting and what a relief: No profanity or nudity. Unfortunately, because of the nature of apartheid/segregation, violence was depicted in a graphic manner--all offset by the stimulating conversations of Mandela and de Klerk in their attempts to end the violence and end segregation in South Africa. This film inspires because it shows what one majestic man and his followers did to change the history of segregation in South Africa. Poitier is a credit to his race and his profession and Caine certainly does a swell job in his role. Four stars to this well-produced film set in Cape Town, South Africa.
It is becoming more and more challenging to override those headlines about crime and I always turn the television channel when the violence goes over the top and I try to avoid those programs that splash profanity around. There really is much positive happening in the world because the world continues to spin and the sun rises and sets daily; so if we bear these realities in mind we can offset all the negatives that the media continues to deluge us with and we must remember that in a free world we can choose to wade in the negatives or sidestep same. Nevertheless, it is disheartening to see so much emphasis put on celebs who are out of control and victims who have been assailed; so kudos to those programmers and media types who focus on the positive and golden stars to those film-makers who avoid profanity, violence and graphic sex. On my CONNECTIONS program I focus on the lighter side and remember what actor Clint Walker said, that "We in the media have an opportunity to set an example with high standards". Onward
After my Thursday radio program wherein I hosted golfer Terry Love and actor Perry King, we headed over to Courthouse Coffee and joined Beverly Lewis, Donna Arz and Diana Farr where the conversation quickly sequed into marriage/divorce. Actor King talked about his disappointment with his two failed marriages and the pain of divorce all the while I was feeling somewhat proud of myself for managing to navigate over thirty-nine years of what many call the most difficult of relationships, marriage. I really do liken marriage to my newest found passion, golf, in that when you stay the course and look back at the field littered with the bodies who have been felled, there is that glorious feeling of accomplishment in simply beating the odds. I am amused when the excuses come up such as "we grew apart" as if this has to be the end of all. As a veteran of a long-lasting marriage, I have learned much; and one important truth is that marriage is like a successful business in that in order for the marriage to work there must be a mutual respect/regard for the other; humor definitely helps and there must be space in the togetherness. I have learned, like in business, discussion and negotiation of issues is one of the keys to success. If you run hollering and hysterical out of a meeting, it's probably a deal breaker and it only makes more of an emotional mess on the domestic scene. So, like in pre-school, when tempers flare and old issues become button-pushers, time-outs are a good idea so the parties can retreat to their separt havens until the dust settles. I'm patting myself on the back as I approach yet another milestone at the end of this month, another year of marriage. Yes, it can work; but there is always work to be done, always change to adapt to. I say celebrate the achievement and reward yourself for staying the course. ..
January 2nd 2008 - I woke up a little tired and apprehensive about the year. It is so true that getting up around 6:00 is a major key for me and my success. I know that my year is about taking the best care of myself ever. Graceful day I had. Not a lot of energy, but clean. Real good food choices and a mid afternoon nap. The biggest gift of being really present today was experiencing my son Kai suggest praying for his cousin, who we just found out has a bone infection in his leg. I am real excited about tomorrow. Another day of mystery unfolding.
Greetings all, attention Veterans! Good News! I just want to give you a heads up about a free resource for veterans of all eras in Yuba City. I know that's a long way to go, but many of you travel to Sacramento for V.A. services so, consider this: Spa Therapy Wellness Center has been in business for eight years in Yuba City, and has recently opened a new 3600 square foot facility in Plumas Ct., at the end of Plumas St., owned by Physical Therapist, Jennifer Nagy-Cordray. The Gold Studio, which provides a calming location for the long awaited wellness classes has plenty of room. During this interim period, while classes are still small, Spa Therapy would like to offer 24 veterans in need a free six week class in trauma resolution skills out of thanks for contributing to our ability to thrive. This powerful Relaxation & Trauma resolution skills class, known as ‘iRest,’ has been used at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. In a preliminary study done at Walter Reed, iRest has been shown to help alleviate symptoms in military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with P.T.S.D. Soldiers suffering a 40 or higher on the military’s post-traumatic stress scale showed a decrease of 24 points after practicing iRest as a relaxation technique. Spa Therapy Wellness center is donating the space. I am donating the expertise. We still have some spots open. Each free stipend will be good for a six week series of iRest classes beginning Jan. 3rd on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Each stipend will also include six audio CD’s to work with at home. Using a CD while falling asleep can reinforce the relaxation benefits of the live classes. Each CD will match the six steps of the class, gradually taking each Stipend recipient through a series of stages in the direction of wholeness and balance. Your cost: zero. Please call me or email me for more information and help spread the word! This is not only an amazing deal, it works! Please do not suffer in isolation. You have to take the first step, contact me, Gabrielle Pullen, at 530 263-3323.
I am a chiropractor utilizing Network Spinal Analysis and I was surprised when briefing the Bee the other day. It seemed to me, and many of my patients, that the author claims the California State Board banned Network because of false claims of effectiveness. I have been personally researching the life enhancing benefits of Network for 8 years. I have solid scientific research that demonstrates very real positive changes physically, mentally and emotionally. The healing waves that are developed in care are real. I would love to have the opportunity to show a Bee staff writer my research and a demonstration of Network. I would be happy to be interviewed. We chiropractors are a wonderful resource for health, and care for the human body. Andrew Downey, DC 916.955.0686 I will be giving a Health Talk on December 13, next Thursday, at 7:00 at our Auburn office. Everyone is welcome. I hope a staff writer for the Bee shows up. See www.gracefulhealth.com for directions. *All dates for Health Talks on our web site are for 2008. Thursday Dec. 13th is correct.
Network in the News
I was real surprised to be shown an article about chiropractic in the paper the other day. The Sacramento Bee has run a 2 part segment on how the state board of chiropractic has not been doing a good job.
At first I was shocked to see Network Spinal Analysis being listed as a banned technique. Then I realized how ludicrous this was because it is not a banned technique. NSA has never been banned. The chiropractic state board does not have the legal authority to do so. My license allows me to care for anyone regardless of age or condition utilizing any technique that does not puncture the skin nor prescribe drugs.
Chiropractic has 250 (or so) techniques. NSA is one of them. Chiropractic colleges teach between 2 and 14 techniques. The ones they teach are significantly tied up in politics and economics. Just because a technique for changing someone's life is not taught in chiropractic school does not mean it is banned. Chiropractic college is geared to do one thing. Produce excellent, safe chiropractors. Outstanding chiropractors spend thousands of hours & dollars learning the cutting edge of science, art and philosophy after graduation. Please know that chiropractors are a gold mine of health, knowledge and compassion for the communities we serve.
NSA is amazing, low force, gentle & powerful. 7 years of research shows that people in my office become healthier physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually. They become more compassionate and loving. Their life gets better! I am always happy to show my research data to anyone who asks.
Warmest Regards,

My family has been self-taught in this asian practice, having read many of the top authorities in the field (including Daniel Kennedy's "Feng Shui For Dummies").
Many of the concepts seem like "voodoo" or "snake oil" but there is almost no cost to many of the "cures" prescribed in these books.
You don't need to hire an expensive "Feng Shui Practitioner" to examine your residence for Feng Shui flaws......just go online and "Google" the subject and you'll find a plethora of web sites that will provide oodles of information. Another curious aspect of Feng Shui is that you don't have to believe in it, in order for it to work! My wife, daughter, and myself are all very skeptical and continue to say its "wacky" and "silly" but the cures we have tried continue to work to this day.
I'd like to see more discussion locally about this curious topic. Should there be an interest in a discussion group, I'd be happy to lend my expertise (and experience) with various Feng Shui cures that we've implemented in our home.

As a director/producer I love the process of controlling the action and being solely responsible for the outcome of the program and as a photographer, I appreciated being behind the camera. So, when golf pro/instructor Carol French suggested my being on video, I felt resistance and was less than thrilled with the idea. However, the process--which took place at The Ridge range--was less than painful and was actually a learning process in that the video allows for objectivity--seeing onself from beginning to end, from top to bottom. This process, however, is suggested for advanced beginners and I have been a dedicated player for 15 months and am in the mind-set to make the necessary changes without feeling overwhelmed. So, Carol French, thanks for providing me with a learning experience I would not have chosen. Did I mention French teaches at The Ridge and Black Oak and--oh yes--shot 66 at The Ridge. Carol rocks. |
