Trader Joe's is coming to Auburn: Fact or Fiction?

DJ MC

Recently, it was reported in the Auburn Journal that Trader Joe's is planning a store in Auburn, California.

If true, this is really great news! If the rumors are true, the new Trader Joe's location will be in the old Ralph's Supermarket at the corner of Highway 49 and Bell Road.

Some of the great products that Trader Joe's carries include their very famous "Charles Shaw" wines for only $2 a bottle. Commonly referred to as "Two Buck Chuck"....Charles Shaw wines have won Gold Medals in wine competitions, most recently at the Orange County Fair.

Another thing Trader Joe's does well is dried fruits and nuts. They have great frozen foods, even a good line of pet foods too. If they choose the old "Ralphs" spot, they'll have plenty of space for a "Flagship" store.

Hopefully this is not a pipe dream, and will actually happen in our lifetimes!

Whats next? Costco or Home Depot? (wishes do come true!!!)

Yah, let's put all the local businesses into bankruptcy too...

Hey just pulling your leg...those local businesses are ripping us off because many of us are too lazy to drive down the hill.

Home Depot will make Eisley's honest---or perish.
Costco will make Pak N' Save honest...or Safeway will close 'em.
Trader Joe's will hurt Ikeda's (at first) but they will respond by having better prices in the off-season and will survive on Bay Area tourists during skiing and boating seasons!

I don't know about being too lazy to drive down the hill smilies/tongue.gif But if you factor in drive time (round-trip), gas, traffic frustration, etc. you probably aren't getting a whole lot of savings...if any.

I've never been a huge TJ fan but you certainly have my vote for an Auburn Home Depot!!

I used to think TJ's was just a store you went to for odd items (like rice pasta). I recently moved, and now live right near a Trader Joe's. I started doing ALL my shopping there and shaved $100/week of my grocery bill! Their prices are awesome! I plan to move back soon, and I really hope TJ's does come to Auburn.

Honestly, I don't think they are a competitor for Ikedas, they don't sell the same stuff. TJ's is like a regular grocery store, with a lot of hard-to-find and organic items as well. I mean, I buy butter, laundry soap, sponges, meat... all my normal groceries there. Ikedas is more like a specialty shop, and also has yummy burgers! You sure can't get burgers like that at Trader Joes!

There are only two stores I drive down the hill for on a somewhat regular basis. They are REI and Trader Joe's. I don't think an REI is necessary in Auburn. But, in my opinion, a Trader Joe's would be one of the best things that could happen to Auburn and most everyone I know feels the same way.

During a recent shopping trip there, everyone I talked to was either from Auburn, or Grass Valley. They, too, were totally supportive of a store here in Auburn.

The prices are great. The quality of the products they carry is great. And the variety of products they carry is so vast, that the last time I was there, I was able to get everything I needed without making another stop.

The best part about shopping there for me is that I feel like a kid in a candy store!

The Trader Joe's rumor is just that -- a rumor. I spoke with the corporate office and they said "Auburn is not part of our five year plan" and "We have no plans to open a store in Auburn." What's happening at the Ralph's location, according to Placer County officials, is the landlord is splitting the store so that he can rent to more than one tenant. At this point, nothing is slated to go in the space as far as the county knows, because no permit requests or plans have been submitted from any potential lessee. That's the story I reported in the Sentinel.

Update: I had a conversation with someone in the know and unfortunately, it looks like Auburn is about #5 on a list of nearby communities that they are looking at. Though it could still be possible, chances aren't looking good right now. However, Coscto might be a real possibility.

smilies/smiley.gifYes, I agree that we Auburnites are so lucky to have the experience of living in a wonderful place and so I am happy to go down the hill to Trader Joe's because we really don't need everything TO COME TO US. We really can leave Auburn and return to that much less traffic. Like the lady said: "We can't have everything..." and yet we really do; we do, indeed.
