Unsolved murders in Placer County, no matter how long ago they
occurred, remain active in law enforcement case files. There are a
number of vicious murders still being investigated since there is no
statute of limitation for a homicide. These cold case files remain open
and detectives continue to look for clues and information that could
lead to solving the crimes. In the coming months, some of those brutal,
unsolved slayings, and the progress in bringing the murderer or
murderers to justice, will be covered in the Sentinel. – editor

Tom Stefani, the gentle giant of a boy who was born and raised in this community, died October 4 in Afghanistan. An Eagle Scout, honor student and professional Range Manager with the US Forest Service, Tom volunteered to go to Afghanistan where he was killed by a roadside bomb. Only last fall, he left his beloved job in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, the new home he’d just purchased, and the family he loved, and headed out to volunteer for the non-violent US’s Foreign Agriculture Service “campaign” to salvage the environment of Afghanistan amidst all the war.
The Placer County Water Agency, which does a good job meeting the demands of its growing service areas, is also helping with a statewide public awareness campaign called “California’s Water: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore.”
A Placer County sheriff’s deputy has been suspended from duty and is free on $10,000 bail following his arrest on suspicion of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Ausnow identified the deputy as Michael S. Johnson, 26, a member of the sheriff’s department for two years. Johnson was assigned to the sheriff’s substation in Colfax at the time of his arrest late last week. The City of Colfax contracts with the sheriff’s department for police services.
Johnson is due in superior court in Auburn October 23 for arraignment and entry of plea. His bail bond was posted by Frank Calabretta’s Bail House.
