DA's labor services contract is renewed

A $550,000 purchase order for Valley Toxicology Service, Inc. of West Sacramento to perform forensic laboratory work for the Placer County District Attorney’s office through next September 30 has been approved by the board of supervisors.

The board of supervisors has authorized a $726,268 contract with Western Engineering Contractors, Inc. for first-phase construction of Franklin School Community Park on Laird Road in the Loomis/Granite Bay area.

 
Placer’s low-cost flu clinics are scheduled

A drive-through flu shot clinic will be held next Tuesday, October 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. Attendees should use the Fairgate Street entrance off Auburn-Folsom Road.

Oct. 2 Water Logged
In a remote location in the forest 12 miles east of China Wall  near Foresthill, a water trailer was stolen from a logging operation.
 
Oct. 8 Shooting
Suspects fired a weapon into a home on Karchner Road in Sheridan, narrowly missing both residents. The victims stated that they have no known enemies.

Unsolved murders in Placer County, no matter how long ago they occurred, remain active in law enforcement case files. There are a number of vicious murders still being investigated since there is no statute of limitation for a homicide. These cold case files remain open and detectives continue to look for clues and information that could lead to solving the crimes. In the coming months, some of those brutal, unsolved slayings, and the progress in bringing the murderer or murderers to justice, will be covered in the Sentinel. – editor

Kimberly Ann Morgan-Stewart and her estranged husband, Mike, met at a Wheatland pizza parlor to discuss a divorce where they argued, and after a brief meeting, drove away in separate cars.

That was the last time the woman, 21, of Sheridan, was seen in public, and authorities believe she has been murdered although her body has not been found. She has been missing for more than 30 years.

 
Auburn asks state to cede in-city portion of Highway 49 for Streetscape project

It’s been talked about for years and now Auburn has started to move on it: convincing the State of California to cede to the city the portion of Highway 49 that extends from City Hall through the Downtown area to the Elm Avenue/Lincoln Way intersection.

Sept. 26 A la ‘Cart’

A 26-year-old male inmate threw a library cart at the Auburn Main Jail, damaging the cart beyond repair. The estimated cost for replacement is $425.  

Sept. 27 Prowler Pinched

A suspect was seen prowling around vehicles and a closed business on Grass Valley Hwy. in Auburn. Upon contact with deputies, he identified himself with a false name and date of birth. He was on probation for burglary.

Help carry on Tom’s dream

Dear Editor,

Tom Stefani, the gentle giant of a boy who was born and raised in this community, died October 4 in Afghanistan.  An Eagle Scout, honor student and professional Range Manager with the US Forest Service, Tom volunteered to go to Afghanistan where he was killed by a roadside bomb. Only last fall, he left his beloved job in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, the new home he’d just purchased, and the family he loved,  and headed out to volunteer for the non-violent US’s Foreign Agriculture Service “campaign” to salvage the environment of Afghanistan amidst all the war.

 
PCWA joins statewide water education campaign

The Placer County Water Agency, which does a good job meeting the demands of its growing service areas, is also helping with a statewide public awareness campaign called “California’s Water: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore.”
 
Sheriff’s deputy faces sexual misconduct charge

A Placer County sheriff’s deputy has been suspended from duty and is free on $10,000 bail following his arrest on suspicion of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Ausnow identified the deputy as Michael S. Johnson, 26, a member of the sheriff’s department for two years. Johnson was assigned to the sheriff’s substation in Colfax at the time of his arrest late last week. The City of Colfax contracts with the sheriff’s department for police services.

Johnson is due in superior court in Auburn October 23 for arraignment and entry of plea. His bail bond was posted by Frank Calabretta’s Bail House.
