Mayor Bob Snyder and the city council commended the Auburn Community Cancer Endowment Fund this week. Accepting the honor from the mayor were Bart O’Brien, center, who chairs the endowment’s board of directors, and Dr. Ralph deVere White, director of the UC Davis Cancer Center. The endowment, started six years ago by Dick Azevedo, Virgil Traynor, Merv Hall and Norma Harris, now exceeds more than $1.5 million and supports UC Davis’ cancer research activities. Auburn’s Joanne Neft had a special guest in tow at Depoe Bay the other day — Nick Coombe, manufacturing manager of the Honey Collection in New Zealand, which produces honey-based Manuka Naturals healing skin creams. The pair celebrated the FDA’s recent approval of Active Manuka Honey for the treatment of wounds and burns. Neft, Manuka Naturals’ distributor, said the products are available at Auburn Drug Company, Eisley’s Nursery, Lincoln Produce Market, Newcastle Produce & Deli and Auburn Nutrition Center. Auburn Recreation District Board Chairman Jim Carroll, left, and A.R.D. Administrator Kahl Muscott are shown prepping for the district board’s most recent meeting at which officials of the Meadow Vista Community Center requested $100,000 in county park mitigation funds to complete work on the center. The board took the request under advisement. The board still is considering a proposed five percent cost-of-living raise for non-union employees.
