Dozens of Armed Forces veterans enjoyed a pre-Veterans Day lunch put on by the Bear River Lionesses at the Higgins Lions Community Center near Lake of the Pines last Saturday. Sue Hall, one of the event’s organizers, is shown with three World War II vets: Bill Rowe (U.S. Army Air Corps), left, Mark Osweiler (U.S. Army and former POW); and Dick Bowen (U.S. Navy medical corpsman assigned to 5th Marine Division).

The women’s jail cell is located underneath the stairs at the historic Placer County Courthouse in Old Town Auburn. Now a museum exhibit, the cell was once used to segregate female inmates from the male jail population. Admission to the Placer County Courthouse Museum is free, but donations are welcome. The museum’s gift shop, which also serves as a visitor center, features the county’s gold display as well as books on local subjects and more. Photo by Don Chaddock.
