Ed Bonner, right, Placer County’s sheriff-coroner-marshal, gave Undersheriff Steve D’Arcy a hearty farewell handshake this week after D’Arcy revealed that he plans to retire November 16. D’Arcy spent 13 years as undersheriff after serving 23 years with the San Jose Police Department and two years as a U.S. Army criminal investigator. He’ll be succeeded by Devon Bell, currently the assistant sheriff.

The Leadership Auburn Class of 2007, which graduated in June, gathered for one last work day on Saturday to complete their class project. The beautification of the “ore cart corner” at High Street and Auburn Folsom Road received a seeding of wild flowers, new plants to replace those that were lost over the summer, fresh ground covering and a temporary sign thanking all the sponsors of the project. Longtime Auburn resident Mary Farinha smiled as she arrived at St. Teresa of Avila Church on Sunday, two days before her 105th birthday. She was accompanied by two of her four children, Mario and Teresa Farinha, and a great-grandson, Ryan DeMartini. Welcoming her was Father Innocent Subiza. She was presented with a birthday cake after receiving Holy Communion.

Pearl Harbor survivor Lou Conter, a U.S. Navy crewman aboard the battleship USS Arizona, was greeted by Sue Hall at the pre-Veterans Day lunch hosted by the Bear River Lionesses last week. After the December 7, 1941 attack on the Arizona, Conter became an aviator and remained in the Navy for 26 years.

Dozens of Armed Forces veterans enjoyed a pre-Veterans Day lunch put on by the Bear River Lionesses at the Higgins Lions Community Center near Lake of the Pines last Saturday.
