AROUND TOWN (& PICTURE THIS!) – This was one busy week for yours truly, ranging from beauty queen hopefuls gathering in Newcastle on Monday to a late night Colfax City Council meeting on Tuesday, attending the final Cruise Nite on Friday and still managing to get in some people-watching at the Black and White Ball on Saturday night. So, let’s get started. ...

AROUND TOWN – There’s a lot happening in our area, so let’s get to the good stuff. Margareta Swann was  practically doing backflips when she told me Kevin Cohen, a big wig of Swarovski crystal, was slated to pay a visit to Golden Swann (which was recently named a top retailer of the high-end crystal) on Wednesday (Sept. 19). The visit came as a complete surprise. ... The American River area near Auburn was the staging ground for a film crew as they worked on a commercial for Kawasaki ATVs last week. ...

LINCOLN LINES – Reese Browning tells me that his Old Town Pizza restaurant in Lincoln is going back to the 60’s every Tuesday in September. Each of these days the Lincoln location will be decorated in a 60’s theme and employees will be donning garb from the era. Customers who show up dressed for the occasion can win prizes. For those who like a bargain, the restaurant’s 14-inch pizza will have cheese and pepperoni pizza available at the flashback price of $5 (limit two pizzas at this price for dine in or take out only). For more info, give the restaurant a ring.

Shop and Stroll, but Don't Park

PARKING PROBLEMS – I hear that parking in Downtown Auburn will be discussed at the next general meeting for that district’s business association. Should parking be changed from three hours to just one? In my opinion, no. It will undermine the work the city is trying to do with its Streetscape plan to get visitors to “stop, shop and stroll.” There won’t be much strolling if they can only park for an hour. One visit to a restaurant and they’d need to move their car. I can see changing the parking to two hours, but, like a potato chip, one simply isn’t enough. The next general meeting of the business association will be Sept. 6 at 6:15 p.m. at the State Theater building on Lincoln Way in Auburn. The public is invited to attend.

PIC PICK – This week’s snapshot comes courtesy of Steve Gold, who took the photo of a proud Faber Eaves as he was presented with an award for being the top individual fundraiser at the Relay for Life event in Auburn on Sunday. Faber, the lucky gent married to Sharon Gannon, was the team captain for the Knights of Columbus and marks the first year the organization participated in the relay. As a group, they raised more than $7,200.

All from Auburn, they are, from left, Ms. Accomplished America California State Queen Lisa Clark, Mrs. Placer County Heather Scott-Clark (she’s married to Lisa’s brother) and Miss Accomplished Nevada Placer County Shelley Layland. "We’re here to show our support," Heather told me. The ladies took a tour of the remodel and viewed the slideshows depicting the town’s history.

The Streetscape Show Hits the Road

WALKING THE STREETS – Muggy heat didn’t slow down a group of business and civic leaders last week as they strolled the streets of Auburn with the folks behind the city’s "Streetscape" beautification plan. Chalking out areas where the sidewalks are to be widened and small entry way monument signs are to go was one way to get more of Auburn’s movers and shakers on board and get their "buy in," but more than one on the walk expressed concerns over making Auburn appear too "touristy." When concerns were voiced regarding improving drainage in Old Town Auburn, Auburn Mayor Bob Snyder said the Streetscape plan doesn’t involve storm drains because the cost would skyrocket. Streetscape tour guide Paul Weller (the senior landscape architect for Rocklin-based Foothill Associates) said, "We can leave it just the way it is or we can look at this as an opportunity and investigate."
