Restaurant Review by Don Chaddock Luigi’s Little Italy is an unassuming Italian restaurant in Downtown Auburn that has become a fixture for many as a way to celebrate a special occasion, such as Valentine’s Day. On a recent Wednesday night, after a fierce round of shuffleboard at Bob & Betty’s 160 Club, I made my way over Luigi’s with Sonja Vargas and Steve Conklin.
While my friend Becky Martin wasn’t working that evening, Michaela
Cornell was and she did a great job of keeping us in line. The dining
room is decorated with faded photos hanging on the walls while the
tables are draped in red and white checkered tablecloths. It was quite
cozy. Perusing the menu, I noticed the meals are reasonably
priced. Sonja urged me to try the calamari filet, which she said was
her favorite. While I enjoy seafood, I really wanted to try something a
bit more traditional such as the meatballs or a nice pasta dish. “If you don’t order it, I will and I’ll make you try it,” she said. Where was my wife when I needed her? Under pressure, I ordered the calamari and stuck with water for my beverage. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Perfect seasoning, a nice light sauce and a hearty portion made the meal. Service
was excellent as Michaela kept tabs on our table, making sure water
glasses were filled and that everything was to our liking. Whether
celebrating an anniversary, birthday, Valentine’s Day or just looking
for a cozy meal for two, Luigi’s is a great choice. The restaurant
certainly complements the other dining establishments in Downtown
Auburn. Calamari Filet, $16.95, Parmesan coated, with prawns, served with a lemon butter and caper sauce. Luigi’s Little Italy, 760 Lincoln Way, Auburn, 530-885-8801.
