City’s ‘Streetscape’ plans moving forward (A Closer Look cont.) |
The City of Auburn’s redevelopment plans for Downtown and a portion of Old Town were discussed in depth at last Friday’s Auburn Chamber of Commerce Power Breakfast held at the Holiday Inn.
The kick-off of the first phase of redevelopment, dubbed “Streetscape,” will happen in May when Project Auburn, a community volunteer effort, will renovate the facade of the State Theater Building on Lincoln Way in Downtown. The city’s part of the “Streetscape” project gets under way in August with the focus stretching from Oakwood to Linden. This first phase will include a plaza, featuring an outdoor dining area, in Central Square located at High Street and Lincoln.
“Our goal of the ‘Streetscape’ is to keep people in town and get people from out of town to come here,” said City Council member Bridget Powers.
The redevelopment of Lincoln and High Street carries an estimated $3 million price tag, but Powers said the city is ready and willing to pay for the improvements.
“We’ve been working on this for several years, so the money has been (accumulating) for several years,” she said. “The city is prepared to pay for these projects even in this (economic downturn).”
Information kiosks will be situated throughout the Lincoln Way and High Street redevelopment corridor, creating an “inviting” area to promote foot traffic between the two business districts of Old Town and Downtown. The kiosks and signage will be based on the original Michael Kent Murphy design used for the new billboard that was constructed on Maple Street in Old Town.
The end of Reamer Street will feature a new monument sign, helping direct I-80 traffic to the Elm Street offramp.
Future plans include an archway sign to stretch across Lincoln Way near City Hall, beautification efforts along Grass Valley Highway and a monument sign coming into the city from the canyon on Lincoln Way.
