Letters to the Editor
Leash laws must be enforced

Dear Editor,

Recently, on a public trail near Auburn, a horse was attacked by an off-leash dog resulting in injuries requiring vet emergency treatment.  We have leash laws, but only a few obey them because there is no enforcement.  As soon as most dog owners go into the woods, they take leashes off.  Leashed dogs, wildlife, and horses, are all targets for these kinds of ever-increasing vicious dog-attack encounters.

The next step is to ban all dogs from any trails—this is already done in Yosemite. We must either ban dogs or increase taxes and/or use fees to guarantee leash law enforcement. In spite of all this tragic law-breaking, Placer County residents still insist on bad-mouthing and cutting taxes which denies the public even the most basic protections.

Offenders must be arrested, hit with heavy fines, forbidden from ever using public lands, and serve mandatory jail time. We must remove scofflaws and take back our public lands so that we can safely enjoy them once again.

Otherwise, we risk being attacked as our public lands become the sole playground for lawbreakers.

Ose shouldn’t bash McClintock

Dear Editor,

I appreciate the fact that Doug Ose is running for John Doolittle’s seat for congress.

What I do not appreciate is the flyer I received today – that was paid for and authorized by Doug Ose for Congress – bashing Tom McClintock.

If Doug Ose thinks that he is the better man for the job, great; prove it to us voters in the 4th district based on his track record and his plans for the future. But for heavens sake, he needs to quit acting like a child and bad-mouthing his opponent. We, the voters, had enough of that garbage when John T. Doolittle was running.

Thanks for supporting comedy night

Dear Editor,

The members of Soroptimist International of Auburn want to thank the community for their support of our 7th Annual Crystal Gala Comedy Night, held Saturday, March 15 at The Ridge Golf & Event Center. This event was our best ever and we raised over $16,000. All of the proceeds from this event will be reinvested in the community in support of programs that benefit women and girls, helping them to Live Their Dream.

A special thank you goes to our event sponsors:  Auburn Iron Works, Harris Industrial Gases, Wells Fargo Bank, Open Door Catering, Double Bar A Enterprises, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, Dwight A. Matheson/Morgan Stanley, Sue Anderson/Edward Jones, Maki Heating & Air Conditioning, Belle Beauty Supply, Auburn-Placer Disposal Service, E-Z Way Driving School and Auburn Printers. Without your support, this event would not be possible.

Thank you, too, to all of the local businesses and to the Members of Soroptimist International of Auburn who donated many items for our live and silent auction, in particular Naggiar Winery, Cambria Bicycle Emporium, Double Bar A Enterprises and Teena Wilkins and the Vina Castellano Winery.   Your generosity contributed directly to our success.

Soroptimist’s signature project is the Women’s Opportunity Award, three grants given to deserving women in our community who are heads of their households and are in need of support to upgrade their skills and/or re-enter the workforce to improve their lives and the lives of their families.  Our Club also awards the Violet Richardson Award which recognizes volunteerism by young women, a Sierra College scholarship, several high school scholarships and the Ruth Johnston Memorial Scholarship.  Soroptimist also supports Peace for Families, H.E.A.R.T. and many other local charities.

Thanks for making prom a success

Dear Editor,

The Sugar Plump Fairies wish to thank everyone who helped make The Fairy Prom a great success. The prom raised funds to support arts programs for youth of the greater Auburn area. Thanks to extensive press coverage, numerous generous raffle prize donors, and an army of volunteers working before, during, and after the prom, youth in our area will enjoy and learn from expanded art experiences that would not be otherwise available.

The Sugar Plump Fairies look forward to partnering with local artists, community groups, and schools to bring experiences of art in all its forms to our youth.  A very generous community has made this all possible.

The Fairies thank everyone who attended. Your generosity and participation made the prom both a fun and successful fundraising event. And a special thanks to the Newcastle Golden Spike Lions Club, who did a magnificent job handling the bartending duties.
The Sugar Plump Fairies are genuinely grateful for everyone’s participation and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s Prom for Grownups.
