PIC PICK
– While attending Saturday’s Black & White Ball, I stumbled upon Jennifer Montgomery, a candidate for Placer County’s 5th District Supervisorial seat. In November, the Serene Lakes resident will face off against incumbent Bruce Kranz. Montgomery is campaigning hard, hitting major events such as the Ball and the State Theater Marquee Lighting Party last month.

THE RACE IS ON – Papers have been pulled and filed on numerous races across the county, so let’s get to ‘em. In Colfax, the two seats vacated by the resignations of Mayor Jim Albright and Sharon Gieras, have four vying for them, plus Mayor Sherrie Blackmun’s seat. Donna Barkle, Ken Delfino (an appointed incumbent who replaced Sharon), Ben Roberts and Steve Harvey will all be on the ballot with Blackmun. The town has been under a lot of pressure lately as they face steep fines imposed by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board related to their wastewater treatment facility (but more on that later). Melba Delfino, the better half of Ken, pulled papers for the post of City Treasurer. ... In Rocklin, three incumbents seek re-election to the City Council while four other residents also tossed their hats in the ring. Brett Storey, Peter Hill and George Magnuson all believe they deserve another term. Trying to snare those seats are Tiffany Wadell, Angela Torrens, Ed Rowen and David Nelson. Development is a hot button issue in Rocklin, especially with the Clover Valley project still on the table. ... In Auburn, Lisa Worthington was the surprise candidate for City Council. She pulled – and filed – papers with only minutes to spare before the deadline. Worthington is Kevin Hanley’s appointee to the city’s Planning Commission and is probably best known as one of two commissioners working to revise the city’s sign ordinance. Mayor Keith Nesbitt is seeking re-election and Bob Snyder is not. Others vying for spots on the council include Dan Sokol and Dr. Bill Kirby. ... Lincoln’s council race sports two incumbents – Spencer Short and Tom Cosgrove – against Paul Joiner and Stanley Nader. ... In Loomis, Town Councilmembers Tom Millward and Rhonda Morillas will defend their posts against Gary Liss and Charleen “Crickett” Strock. Liss is basing his campaign on Rocklin’s rampant growth and the negative impact it is having on its neighbor. He currently serves on the town’s Park and Open Space Commission as its chairman. I haven’t heard from Charleen yet, but when I do, I’ll let you know her stand.

COLFAX CORNER – The pitchforks, hot tar and feathers were absent from last week’s Colfax City Council meeting. A few heated words were exchanged, but nothing like the fireworks a few months ago. Pamela Creedon, the head of the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board, was taken to task by some of the residents for her comments related to the public’s willingness to pay for cell phones, but not to pay for higher priced (and therefore cleaner) sewer services. She said I had misquoted her in my article on the subject a month ago, then back pedaled and said the quote was “taken out of context” and then, for some reason, she decided to clarify her statement. “I was trying to say the amount of money we expend on luxuries (like cell phones), the importance of flushing our toilets and washing clothes ...” She trailed off onto another thought at that point, never finishing her explanation, and an astute young lady from the audience, Jenny Livingston, called her on it. “Cell phones are not a luxury for some people,” she said. Seeking to clarify her remarks yet again, she said, “My point was, people are willing to pay for those services but unwilling to pay for wastewater treatment.” Isn’t that what I wrote in my original story on the matter? Thanks for backing me up with your own words, Pamela.

BLACK & WHITE BALL – Plenty were out and about at the Ball, including Kelly Fulfer, Janelle Bertilson, Cathy Bianchi, Rich Johnson, Marcello Nolivo, Rebecca Toedter, Peggy and Tom Seitzinger, Marty Warmuth, Ken Tokutomi, Herb Yue, Bridget Powers, Keith Nesbitt, Jerry Kopp, Juan Aceituno, Lowell Jarvis, Harvey and Brenda Roper, Bob and Jennifer Richardson, Tanya Hibbard and Jasen Minton.
