Biscuits & Gravy - Luigi’s Little Italy Lands in New Digs |

ODD STUFF – If you saw Luigi’s Little Italy staff members and friends frantically moving equipment and chairs into new digs near Pistol Pete’s a block up Lincoln Way early last week, your eyes were not deceiving you. Pete Aroz is still planning to open a pizza joint on Harrison near his bar and the post office, but now he’ll have a pasta-serving neighbor. When a landlord disagreement boiled over at Luigi’s, the longtime Downtown Italian eatery had to relocate in a hurry and Pete was more than willing to offer space in his shopping center. Luigi’s also sent an e-mail notification to their customers informing them of the address change. Luigi’s owner Terry Galli tells me they plan to open in their new location in about four weeks. She said customers with questions or concerns may e-mail her at

. “It’s going to be a good thing,” she said. “Pete is a good friend of mine and this will be a good move.” Meanwhile, Pete’s pizza place should be opening in 8 weeks, she tells me.
ARTISTIC LICENSE – Karen Killebrew tells me there are plenty of tickets for various community events at the PlacerArts.org online box office including the Sept. 11 Jazz at 808 concert featuring Jimmy Robinson and Friends at the Arts Building, 808 Lincoln Way. Tickets are 15 bucks for members and 5 bucks more non-members. The next day, on Friday, Sept. 12, the Arts Building will host a dance party with Tango de Oro offering a tango lesson at 8 p.m. for $5 and the Milonga Tango Dance party will follow from 9 p.m. to midnight for a cost of $10. ... If you’d like four free singing lessons, give Sierra Gold Chorus a call. The group (featuring Auburnites Marian Goulart, Fran Chase, Marion Cleaver, Marcia Morris, Cindy Sadtler, Barbara Burdick, Jacque Erdrich, Laurie Soper, Jane Rhodes, Pauline Callaghan, Sandy Hubbard and Linda Smith) invites anyone interested in testing the old pipes to join them on Monday evenings beginning Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Burback Hall, 11577 E Avenue, in Auburn’s De Witt Center. For more info, or to sign up and maybe even sing with the group during the holidays in Nevada City and Auburn, call 530-478-0130 or visit their website at sierragoldchorus.org.
A HELPING HAND – The Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, a worthy organization who helps distribute food to the needy, is holding a non-perishable food drive. On the evening of Sept. 16, empty grocery bags will be distributed throughout several neighborhoods in Auburn. The goal is to collect 6,000 nonperishable food items such as canned meat (tuna, chicken, beef), chili or stew, peanut butter, canned veggies and fruit, beans, spaghetti sauce, canned soup or packages of soup (other than ramen or broth), cereal, pasta, rice, and macaroni and cheese boxed dinners. Cans are preferred over glass containers, which can be fragile. All food must be unopened and safe to eat (that means the expiration date hasn’t passed). Then, on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 21, teams from Bayside Auburn Church will return to retrieve the grocery bags hopefully filled with food. Bags should be placed on the front porch before noon on that day. All donations are tax deductible and they will leave a thank you card for the donation which can be used for tax purposes. Bags of food may also be dropped off at the food closet at 2985 Richardson Drive (off of Bell Road) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more info, call 530-885-1921.
FOR MATT – The fundraiser for Matt Bumpus, an Iraq War veteran who passed away recently after a battle with leukemia, will go on as scheduled at the Auburn Country Club on Friday, Sept. 12. Tickets are $20 per person with live music provided by the lovely Halie O’Ryan and her band. There will be a dinner and silent auction as well. The fundraiser to is help pay for Matt’s hospital bills (which weren’t covered by his veteran’s benefits). For more info, call 530-888-7441 or Laura Bumpus at 530-320-8802.
GREEN THUMB – California Garden Club President Robin Pokorski will present landscape design certificates of appreciation to the folks who created the Memorial and Military Rose Garden located at Bell Road Baptist Church in Auburn. One of those recipients will include local resident Rena Webb, who coordinated the project, and Brian Friesen, a landscape contractor. The presentation will be made on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at noon at the Gold Miners Inn, 121 Bank Street in Grass Valley. The public is welcome and should call Myrtle Findley at 530-346-2450 or e-mail
