DOOLITTLE DOINGS – Pete Evich, a pretty respectable Washington, D.C. lobbyist, is the latest former John T. Doolittle aide to be in the sights of federal authorities investigating the 10-term congressman’s relationship with Jack Abramoff, the crooked lobbyist now serving prison time. Evich disclosed the other day that he’s turning over files to the feds, the same thing David Lopez, JTD’s former chief of staff, is doing while performing Catholic layman’s duties for the parish in El Dorado Hills.
Pete Evich
Where this thing is going is anybody’s guess. Associated with the the
Van Scoyoc Associates lobbying firm in Washington, D.C., Evich is the
$60,000-a-year lobbyist for Sierra College and has worked in that
capacity for the Placer County Office of Economic Development. The
Evich-Doolittle connection doubtless resulted in the congressman’s
recent earmarking of $300,000 for Sierra College’s “mechatronics
workforce training initiative,” and Evich is said to be working on
Democratic U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to make
sure it stays in the final legislation. (For your information, Sierra
College Trustee Aaron Klein said “mechatronics” combines mechanics,
hydraulics, technology and software instruction for repairing products
like ATM machines and hybrid cars. Thank you, Trustee Klein.)
Meantime,
the congressman is telling folks that he’s glad to see his former aides
cooperating in the investigation, which he’s sure will result in
clearing his name and that of his wife Julie. I have a hunch JTD is
still ignoring suggestions that he either resign or not run for another
term next year, and I don’t blame him. If he broke the law, well, he’ll
be out the door — maybe even behind bars — and have to contend with a
pension of about $60,000-a-year. If he didn’t break the law, the feds —
including fellow Republican Attorney General Gonzales — owe him a big
fat red-faced apology.
