Paul Kovacich dialing for big bucks | Print |

Accused wife killer Paul Kovacich Jr. was working the phone in the Placer County Jail at mid-week in the hope of raising the $50,000 he needs to bail out of the place.

The money he’s trying to scratch up would be the 10 percent fee on the $500,000 bail bond he needs to complement the nearly $1 million worth of relatives’ and friends’ properties that were put up as security several months ago. Now his bail is $1.5 million, thanks to Superior Court Judge Robert McElhany’s ruling last week

kovacich_paul_WEB.jpg Kovacich, 58, a pensioned Placer County sheriff’s sergeant and onetime Tracy policeman, has been in jail since late March when he was re-indicted by the Placer County Grand Jury.

He initially was arrested last September on an indictment accusing him of murdering his wife Janet, 28, a quarter-century earlier. There’s been no trace of Janet Kovacich, although investigators are claiming that a piece of skull with what might be a bullet hole in it that was found in Rollins Reservoir near Colfax in 1995 is likely from her body.

Kovacich has pleaded innocent to the charge. A case status hearing will be held in October and his trial is tentatively set for next March, although this will probably change. .

Kovacich’s lawyers are expected to seek a change of venue for the trial on the grounds that seating an impartial jury in Placer County will be difficult  because of the extensive publicity given the case. A gag order prohibiting the principals in the case from talking publicly remains in effect.
