DOOLITTLE DRIPPINGS — Even though John T. Doolittle hasn’t been indicted or otherwise charged with any wrongdoing, our congressman has established a legal defense fund for himself (and presumably for Julie, his wife), although as of June 30 there was no money in it. The House Ethics Committee gave John the okay to set up the fund on June 27. I’m sure there’ll be some contributors kicking in one of these days.

Ever the stout fellow, John keeps shrugging off the idea of possible opposition in next year’s primary election, including Eric Egland of Roseville, a handsome 37-year-old mystery man who’s a USAF Reserve officer and a so-called security consultant. I don’t know Eric Egland, but he sure sounds like a ringer to me. The mature Mike Holmes, who had the guts to oppose JTD in last year’s primary, still looks like the best bet to take him out next June....On the Democratic side, Charlie Brown is outdistancing Doolittle in fundraising and recently got a $5,000 campaign contribution from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s PAC to the Future. Brown is a cinch to nail down the Democratic congressional nomination next year and you can bet your bippy that lots more moolah will be forthcoming from Mrs. Pelosi. You can also bet that Doolittle or whoever emerges as the GOP nominee next year will use the Pelosi contributions as campaign ammunition against Brown. “Just more money from that San Francisco liberal,” they’ll be saying.
