PIC PICK – The Auburn Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th year a few weeks ago with a big bash at the offices. Some of those attending included the lovely ladies shown in this week’s musings. All from Auburn, they are, from left, Ms. Accomplished America California State Queen Lisa Clark, Mrs. Placer County Heather Scott-Clark (she’s married to Lisa’s brother) and Miss Accomplished Nevada Placer County Shelley Layland. "We’re here to show our support," Heather told me. The ladies took a tour of the remodel and viewed the slideshows depicting the town’s history.

From a prime vantage point behind the grill, I also spotted District 3 Supervisor Jim Holmes and his wife Pat, Placer County Museums chief Melanie Barton and her hubby Terry, Placer County Water Agency board member Lowell Jarvis and his wife Debra, Wave Broadband’s Gerry Lyons (who hosts News & Views on Cable Channel 4), Potato Richardson, Becky Martin, Peggy Seitzinger and her brother Marty Warmuth, Alexa Dal Pino, Harvey and Brenda Roper, Gail and Jack Remington, Robert Frew, Randy and former Auburn Mayor Cheryl Maki, Karen Hancock, Gary and Kevin Capps (who were busy serving up frosty beverages), Pete Aroz Sr., Karla Tilley, Auburn City Councilman Kevin Hanley, Auburn Mayor Bob Snyder, current Auburn Chamber President Steve Galyardt and Maita Ford’s Leslie Maita, Susan Teixeira, former Auburn Journal publisher Craig Dennis (who happened to in town from Utah), Dr. Walt Winfrey, Rod and Linda Gross, the grand dame of local politics Annabel McCord, Marsha and Rick McAnulty, Steve Conklin, Dave Francia, Dave Swart, Christine Kooser (of BodyWorks), Tony LaBouf, Brian Rheome, Rich and Peg Johnson, Gary Moffat, Rosie Mietzel, former Auburn Mayor Kathy Sands, Sharon Gannon, Wayne Foote, Jerry Kopp, Kelly Fulfer, Auburn Recreation District board member Scott Holbrook, Marilyn Welz, Madonna Anglin, Rosemary Hedley, Heather Taylor, Linda Robinson, Mark Smith, Cathy Bianchi, Joyce Arnold, E. Ken Tokutomi, and former Chamber presidents Jack Amick, Norma Harris, Monti Reynolds, Vance Sauter, Sherry Gilbert (with her husband Paul), Ralph Roper (with his wife Helen), Forrest Eklund (with his wife, incoming president Cindy), Monroe DeJarnette and Ray Yamasaki.

MUSEUM MUSINGS – Melanie Barton, director for the county’s museums department, was the guest speaker last Wednesday morning at the Auburn Daybreak Rotary Club. Those in attendance were surprised to learn that the county funds six museums, which is rare these days. "It’s the best kept secret," she said. "We have close to a $1 million budget to support and maintain our museums." There are three in Auburn alone – Bernhard Museum Complex, the historic Courthouse, and the Gold Country Museum in the Gold Country Fairgrounds. She also oversees Penryn’s Griffith Quarry Museum, Dutch Flat’s Golden Drift Museum and the Foresthill Divide Museum. The department also maintains the county archives at DeWitt (which is open to the public Monday through Wednesday) and a collection facility (which is not open to the public) that houses thousands of pieces not currently on display. Melanie and her top-notch staff sure have their hands full as they try to get everything logged into a database, transferring the information from the old handwritten system. She says it will make their jobs easier when putting together new exhibits in the future

RUMOR MILL – Why would the Power’s Mansion Inn Gift Shop, located next door in the Livingston Building, need a license for alcohol? A quick check reveals the posted notice lists the Yue brothers (Richard and Herb) as the holders of the aforementioned license. They once owned the Shanghai Restaurant and Bar, so they still have the license and they need a place for that valuable piece of paper to call home. ... While we’re discussing the Livingston Building, there are rumors swirling around town that the popular Edelweiss Restaurant is looking for a new home. Again, a quick check with those in the know shows that the eatery still has three years left on the lease, but after that, it’s up in the air. So, for now, the Downtown breakfast place isn’t going anywhere. ... A new eatery is going into the spot in the Pete Aroz owned building. I’m told it’s going to feature take out food and is in some way connected with a former chef from Latitude’s Restaurant.

CRUISE NITE REPORT – Auburn’s Cruise Nite last Friday, while lightly attended when compared to May and June (Hot August Nights in Reno was on the same weekend), had the perfect weather. Some of those attending included my friend Dave Rosenthal pumping oldies tunes from the KAHI van, Vance Sauter, Steve Conklin, Troy Aroz, Marcello and Sarah Nolivo, Sally Palmer Dawley, Norma Harris and her daughter Kathleen, Enid Baldock and Phil Hawkins. Also, I finally had the opportunity to see my friend (and banking beauty) Monique "Mo" Krafft. Mark your calendars. The next Cruise Nite will be Sept. 14.

WISHING WELL – The town’s premier purveyor of spirits, the Liquor Outlet’s Pete Aroz, celebrated his birthday on Aug. 1. Also wish a happy birthday to Dave Francia (Aug. 16) and Eric Hill (Aug. 20).
