Piggyback Placer Politics

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO BRUCE McCREARY, who’ll hit the 90 mark next Tuesday the 21st. If you don’t know Bruce McCreary, you really haven’t been paying attention. He’s the civil engineer credited with selling Placer County on the idea of building the Middle Fork American River hydroelectric project. He and his partner, the late Sandy Koretsky, even designed the project. God willing, Bruce will be on hand at PCWA headquarters September 13 when the water agency celebrates its 50th birthday.

POLITICAL PLUMBING — With or without incumbent John Doolittle in next June’s congressional primary election, bet that Auburn’s Mike Holmes will be in there again pitching for the Republican nod. Mike’s already filed with the Federal Elections Commission and his official announcement should be made any day now...I imagine Mike will be on hand next Wednesday the 22nd when the moderate/mainstream Republican Congress of Placer County meets in the Loomis Memorial Hall, starting with a social get-together at 5 p.m. The guest speaker on the 6 p.m. program will be Rep. Dan Lungren of the nearby 3rd Congressional District, who sits as a minority member on the House Budget, Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees. Dan is on his second go-around as a congressman. He represented the Long Beach area in the House many years ago but quit when then-Governor George Deukmejian named him to succeed the late Jess Unruh as state treasurer. This was fine and dandy except the appointment had to be approved by both houses of the Legislature. Dan did well in the Assembly, where even Speaker Willie Brown voted for him, but his luck ran out in the State Senate, where he fell a one vote short of approval — that pivotal vote having been cast by Quentin Kopp of San Francisco and I’ll never understand his reasoning. (Kopp later became a judge, thanks to GOP Governor Pete Wilson.) Well, Lungren took the rebuff in stride and went out and got himself elected state attorney general. He served two terms as AG before running for governor and getting creamed by Gray Davis, who later suffered a creaming of his own. Dan succeeded Doug Ose as CD-3’s congressman and one of his first hires was none other than Kirk Uhler, who quit after several months, went into the solar energy business and now sits as the District 4 member of the Placer County Board of Supervisors. I’m sure Kirk will be at next Wednesday’s gathering in Loomis; if he isn’t, I’ll tan his hide. If you’d like to attend, get in touch with Tom Jones at (530) 885-0366 or Gerry Brentnall at (916) 660-0114. And, oh yes, the tariff is $15 for RCPC members and $20 for non-members. The dough covers the rental of the hall and the cost of refreshments.
