SAY HELLO TO SKIP HAWKINS, an oldtime Auburnite if there ever was one. Skip, who’s nearing the 84 mark, has still got plenty of zip and is no slouch when it comes to piloting a Jet Ski, as shown in the top photo recently snapped at Lake Clementine. Skip also keeps company with a spirited golden retriever named Sweetie, whom he’s taught to use a treadmill. That’s a headless Skip kibitzing Sweetie as she goes through her paces. Happy Birthday, in advance, to Skip Hawkins.

HOLMES ON THE RANGE — Mike Holmes was on the East Coast, most notably in Washington, D.C., this week seeking advice — and maybe even some money — for his promised primary run against incumbent Congressman John T. Doolittle next June. Mike, who lost to Doolittle 2 to 1 in last year’s primary, is doing his best to mount a better-financed and more organized campaign this time. There are plenty of Republicans out there — even some far-right conservatives — who see Doolittle as badly damaged goods, even without his indictment by a federal grand jury for corruption stemming from his association with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and Holmes senses that they’re willing to dump the nine-term incumbent and support someone else, preferably Mike Holmes. “I want to keep the district Republican,” Holmes keeps saying. So does Eric Egland, the 30-something Air Force Reserve major who’s still making noise about his own campaign for the GOP nomination next June. Whoever emerges from the Republican pack will have to face Democrat Charlie Brown in the November general election. And get this: Brown, a grizzled old USAF helicopter pilot and decorated veteran, and young Egland really do have something in common — both are graduates of the Air Force Academy...This just in: Mike Holmes’s kickoff fundraiser will be September 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Auburn Country Club. The cost is $50 her head, $95 per couple. Contact Pat at (530) 889-1207 for more details.
