Walt Chatham, left, got a hardy handshake from Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner before appearing before the board of supervisors Tuesday to accept a retirement commendation. Chatham, a deputy for 31 years, is the recipient of heroism medals for saving five people from a burning house in North Auburn and disarming a knife-wielding man who tried to jump from the Foresthill Bridge.
