This Saturday evening at the DeWitt Theater, two young ladies will be crowned the new Miss Auburn and Teen Miss Auburn.
The 72nd annual pageant will mark the culmination of weeks of work
including rehearsals, training and even learning dance steps for a
routine created specifically for this year’s pageant.
The contestants have also been coached on modeling and interview
techniques and, despite rumors to the contrary, there is no swimsuit
competition, according to Toni Foster-Fossum, who heads up the pageant.
They are not just competing for a title, but also for $1,000 in
scholarship bonds.
Current Miss Auburn Casey Schlittenhart, while coaching the ladies in
Newcastle on a warm September evening, said she enjoyed being Miss
Auburn.
“Pageants are all about relationships,” she said. “This year we got to
do Oktoberfest ... and other fun things in the community. You get to
meet a lot of different people that you otherwise wouldn’t get to meet.”
Each of the contestants this year had to choose a country to represent,
reflecting the pageant’s theme: “Beauty Around the World.” The young
ladies will be in costume and introduce themselves in the language of
the country they’ve chosen. Private interview, essay, evening gown,
public speech, fitness and onstage impromptu question categories are
the areas in which the ladies compete.
Once crowned, the new “queens” will serve their communities at various
functions around town. For more, go to www.westcoastpageants.com.
