AROUND TOWN (& PICTURE THIS!) – The ninth class of Leadership Auburn assembled for the first time at the lovely home of Bill and Janet North last Wednesday evening. In this week’s snapshot, we have, from left, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital’s Mindy Donovaro (taking the class this year), Auburn Chamber of Commerce President Steve Galyardt, and two others enrolled in the class for 2007-08, Maita Ford’s Leslie Maita and Linda Maeding.

head honcho Greg Hegwer, Placer County Historical Society President

O’Brien. An hour earlier in the evening, the Norths also played host to
a Leadership Auburn Alumni mixer. It was nice to see so many friends
such as Rich and Peg Johnson, Casey Conway, Michael Barbieri, Tony
Hazarian, Auburn Mayor Bob Snyder, Bill Wharton, local barrister Monti
Reynolds, Peggy Seitzinger (who also spoke to the new class), Monroe
DeJarnett, George Coe, Cathy “Auburn’s Ace of Cakes” Bianchi, Placer
SPCA’s Leilani Vierra, Janet Paehlig, Robert Frew, Bill Radakovitz,
Debi Lawrence, Beverly Lewis of the Placer-Lake Tahoe Film Office,
Rodney Spangler of Emerald Green Janitorial Service (the folks
responsible for cleaning up after the Black and White Ball) and Rod
Gross. ... Later that evening, a few of the Leadership folks found
their way to the Club Car, where the DoubleShots performed their
standard covers but also did a few of their original songs at the
request of the audience. Among those enjoying the tunes were Steve
Conklin, the fetching Nancey Holland, Michael Barbieri and Dan and
Karen Hancock. ... Operation: MOM is seeking help. The local
organization that supports our troops by gathering and sending needed
supplies will hold a brainstorming session in Colfax on Thursday, Sept.

... The City of Auburn will be remodeling the
public restrooms in Old Town Auburn between Oct. 8th and 12th. Expect
two new American With Disabilities Act compliant toilets, anti-slip
commercial flooring and new paint.

Teri Gibson’s Christmas Village will celebrate 25 years in business.

Halloween village decorations. ... The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce
throws some great mixers in the fall, including last week’s shindig
hosted by the Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic on Sierra College
Boulevard. Leslie Griffith, vice president for the chamber, thanked the
sponsors of the Loomis Eggplant Festival (coming Oct. 6) and did a fine
job in place of President Henry Schneider, who couldn’t attend. The
usual suspects were spotted, including Loomis Mayor Tom Millward and
fellow Town Council members Russ Kelley and Miguel Ucovich (along with
his wife Nancy), Bert Braun (of the South Placer Heritage Foundation
and the driving force behind November’s Cowboy Poetry Fall Gathering),
Jim “The Rod Doctor” Victorine, Vicki Perkins, Roy Arriaga of Carté
Jewelers, Cynthia McCoy of Aunt Cynthia’s Bed and Biscuit, Scott Paris
of High Hand Nursery, and Pauline Von Thaden of Green Tree Dance Studio.

HAPPENING – Remember that this Saturday, Sept. 29 at 5:30 p.m., at
DeWitt Theater, a new Miss Auburn and Teen Miss Auburn will be crowned.
Admission is $8 or $6 for seniors. Children 5 and under are free. For

www.westcoastpageants.com. ... The Auburn Education Foundation is
hosting a Western Roundup Dinner at the gym at E.V. Cain from 5:30 to
8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids
or a family pass is $25 (two kids, two adults), which are available at
local school offices or at the door. The meal will include a hotdog or
hamburger, corn on the cob, beans, salad and a drink. Desserts are
extra, but will be available. The funds raised will go to fund grants
to help pay for librarians and counselors at schools in the Auburn
Union School District. ... On Friday, Oct. 5, there will be a benefit
dinner for Juanita Malone, who is being treated for bone cancer, at the
Headquarter House in Auburn. The group is currently seeking silent
auction items and any help would be appreciated. Call Nanci Malone at

offer assistance. ... Also, on Friday, Oct. 5, is Auburn’s Oktoberfest,
held at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Advance tickets are $22

or $25 at the door. The festivities, including authentic German cuisine
and music, runs from 5 to 10 p.m. This is always a great event and
benefits many of the community programs funded by the Gold Country
Rotary Club of Auburn. ... The Auburn Bluegrass Fest II is Oct. 6 from
noon to 8 p.m. at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Tickets are $25 per
person for adults or $15 for teens. The fundraiser for the Auburn
Placer Performing Arts Center will feature Sidesaddle and Co.,
Thunderfoot Cloggers, Tree Full of Owls, Mountain Laurel, Keith Little
(who recently performed on Jay Leno) with Ed Neff and Paul Knight. Call

WELL – Happy belated birthday to Tim of the DoubleShots who turned
another year younger on Sept. 14. ... Ann Nesbitt is in the hospital
battling cancer. We all wish her well. ... My thoughts and prayers are
with Sarah Sanders Nolivo, who recently lost her mother. Sarah owns the
Club Car in Downtown Auburn. ... Congrats to Jarrod Anderson of
Walker’s Office Supply who is a new daddy. His daughter, Emma, was born
in early September.
