BUNDLE OF JOY DEPT. — Say “Hi, Adorable” to Sophia Alice Calvillo, who bounced into this world September 8th weighing a peppy 6 1/2 pounds and stretching to 18 1/2 inches. She’s the firstborn of former Auburn Mayor Alice Dowdin Calvillo and Frank Calvillo, the retired USMC officer who’s now a big wheel in Governor Schwarzenegger’s anti-terrorism operation. Momma Alice is also a ranking official in the Schwarzenegger administration, although I’m sure she’s looking after Sophia for a while before returning to the grind at the Capitol.

HOLMES ON THE RANGE – Auburn’s Mike Holmes remains
steadfast in his determination to replace John T. Doolittle in the
House of Representatives. He gave it a shot in the June 2006 Republican
primary election and lost 2 to 1. However, his effort certainly
softened up incumbent Doolittle, who remains the subject of a political
corruption investigation being conducted by the U.S. Department of
Justice and its FBI agents. Mike is taking a second shot at JTD and is
a declared candidate for next June’s congressional primary. He’ll be
holding his kickoff fundraiser this Thursday, September 27, starting at
6 p.m., in the Auburn Country Club. Tickets are $50 a single, $95 a
couple. Call Pat at (530) 889-1207 to get some.

CITY
BEAT – City Hall brass have not been talking openly about it (at least
they weren’t as of this past Tuesday morning), but some kind of
agreement has been reached whereby Ernie Shih no longer is on the city
payroll. Shih, in case you came in late, was the city’s information
technology (computers) chief, a reserve policeman and a onetime Auburn
City Employee of the Year when thuggish-looking sheriff’s
plainclothesmen burst into his City Hall office in the spring of 2006,
handcuffed him and hauled him away to the county jail, but only after
allowing an AJ cameraman to get a “grab shot” of him being shoved into
an unmarked squad car. Well, the city bigshots, who still refuse to
shell out specifics about what Shih was suspected of doing, placed him
on administrative leave and his $80,000 salary continued, although I’m
sure a big chunk of it was gobbled up by the lawyers he hired — lawyers
who did a pretty good job because despite all the hoopla, the DA’s
office eventually refused to prosecute. I imagine that the
still-to-be-finalized agreement with Shih calls for some kind of
monetary settlement — and I hope it’s a bundle. The fellow’s reputation
has been destroyed — you cannot unring a bell — and the city worker who
fingered him in the first place ought to be horsewhipped.

ROUNDABOUT
– Father P. Ronan Brennan, the retired longtime pastor of St. Joseph
Church in Auburn and a former Catholic chaplain at Folsom State Prison,
is a patient at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, where he’s
recovering from heavy-duty surgery for a popped aortic aneurysm. Good
guy, that Ron Brennan, and all us sinners hope and pray for his speedy
recovery...Tempus Fugit Dept. — Loyce Smallwood, the comely
communicator, will celebrate six years of her “Connections” show on
KAHI950 next month. Her guest on her 9 a.m. show this Thursday will be
Bob Litchfield, the local lawyer and author...This just in from Nghia
Nguyen Demovic, the very able news disseminator for State Senator Dave
Cox: “Senator Cox announced that the Tahoe Maritime Museum will be
getting a $266,722.34 grant from the California Cultural and
Historical Endowment Board for completion of its new 6,500 square-foot
building that will provide a family-friendly destination for Tahoe
residents and visitors.” Thanks, LaBelle Demovic, and be sure to invite
us to the grand opening. But where at Tahoe is the museum located? ...
If you were planning to attend a special meeting of the board of
supervisors about the Meadow Vista asphalt plant controversy, forget
it. The board will take up the matter some time in November. ...
Speaking of Meadow Vista, it looks like the county is ready to transfer
$75,000 in park dedication fee money to the ARD to get hopping on the
rehabilitation of the Placer Hills Swimming Pool. The county parks
commission also is expected to recommend that $116,000 in dedication
money be spent fixing up the wonderful old Dutch Flat Swimming
Pool...Call Dave Tellman at (530) 889-7000 (the DA’s office) to enter
the Placer Bar Association’s charity golf tournament that’s set for
October 10 at the Turkey Creek Golf Club near Lincoln. Entry fee of
$140 includes the whole works plus dinner. Proceeds will go to the
Mother Lode Regional Office of Legal Services of Northern California,
which is a very worthy not-for-profit legal aid organization.

POLITICAL PARTYING – KFBK’s Tom Sullivan, a darling of the
far-right, now says he won’t run for the 4th Congressional District
seat even if incumbent J.T. Doolittle, a dear pal, opts not to seek a
10th term next year (seven other House Republicans already have decided
not to run again). Sullivan’s reason? The Bee reports that he’s
expected to head for New York City and become a fixture on the Fox
Business Network, a cable TV network that starts airing in mid-October.
One less pain-in-the-neck for Mike Holmes...Charlie Brown, a cinch to
again be the Democratic nominee for the same congressional seat, will
talk at the Auburn Area Democratic Club’s monthly meeting next Thursday
the 4th in the Auburn Library’s Beecher Room, starting at 6:45 p.m.
Brown also will be at the same club’s fundraiser on Sunday the 7th in
Latitudes great restaurant, starting at 2 p.m. with our town’s Rob
Haswell doing the emceeing. Tickets are $30 and you can call (530)
889-8107 for some...And let’s not forget that Paul Berger will be
hosting an Obama House Party at his residence at 862 Holly Hills Dr. in
Auburn next Saturday the 6th from 4 to 7 p.m. “The party is open to
members of all parties and political persuasions,” pens Paul. Call
Berger at (530) 887-1121 for more poop.
