The County of Placer lived up to its word this week and contributed $5.6 million toward the acquisition of the historic Waddle Ranch in Martis Valley north of Lake Tahoe.

The 1,481-acre ranch property is being purchased by the Trust for Public Land and the Truckee Donner Land Trust for a reported $23.5 million. The owner is the family that controls the Hyatt Hotel chain.

Last May, the board of supervisors pledged $10 million toward the purchase, and this week’s action was the initial payment. The remaining $4.4 million will be collected through open space fees from properties elsewhere in Martis Valley.

The Waddle Ranch property dates back to the 1850s and on it are abundant wildlife, wetlands, creeks and old growth pines.

In another matter involving the “great outdoors,” the supervisors authorized Board Chairman Bruce Kranz to inform the State Department of Parks and Recreation of the county’s support of the continued use of motorboats and other motorized vessels on Lake Clementine on the north fork of the American River.

The state agency is considering limiting use of the narrow man-made lake to non-motorized vessels such as canoes and kayaks. Representatives of Congressman John Doolittle, the Auburn Boat Club and State Senator Sam Aanestad voiced support of the county’s request.

The supervisors also authorized a $260,000 contract with the Winzler and Kelly consulting firm to complete the first phase of the Auburn Ravine fish passage restoration project in the Lincoln area.

The work will include modification of the NID gauging station dam and the Hemphill dam on the creek to improve the fish habitat. The county will pay $200,000 toward the contract, the City of Lincoln $10,000 and the NID $50,000.

Assistant Planning Director Loren Clark said the creek modification work is needed to help secure anticipated grants such as $339,645 from CalFed, $55,000 from the Bella Vista Foundation, along with matching dollars from the City of Lincoln ($25,000), NID ($120,000) and the Granite Bay Flycasters ($10,000).
