Thousands turn out for Hot Chili, Cool Cars in Rocklin

The cloudy weather didn’t stop thousands of people from coming out to enjoy the Rocklin Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Hot Chili and Cool Cars.  Nearly 200 classic cars and more than 20 chili cooks competed for prizes at the event in Rocklin on Saturday.

Seventeen persons cruised away with prizes for their classic cars. Richard Fripp, of Reno, NV, took home the “Best in Show” award for his 1938 Chevy pickup. Jim and Collette Stewart, of Auburn, were the runners-up with their 1939 Mercury pickup.

Other winners included Larry Dorset of Rocklin’s 1936 Ford Sedan for Best Paint; Steven Pope’s 1968 Chevy Camaro for Best Engine; Mack Tiner of Loomis’ 1949 Chevy 2-door sedan for Best Interior; Peter Curd of Roseville’s 1969 AMC AMX for Best Muscle Car; Joe Galiata of Lincoln’s 1934 Ford pickup for Best Truck; James Heinz of Rocklin’s 1930 Ford Model A for Best Classic Car; Lane Allen of Reno’s 1929 Ford Coupe for Best Hot Rod and Pete Ramirez of Auburn’s 1953 Ford coupe for Most Unique.

Rocklin is home to the winners in all seven chili categories.  This year’s “Best Chili” prize went to California Transmission. Gene Layne received a $300 cash prize.  Rick Goucher of Rick’s Carpet Care was the runner up in that category. Layne’s recipe also won the “People’s Choice Award” – which is voted on by the event attendees. The City of Rocklin/Station Extreme spiced things up with the “Hottest Chili” award. Judi Whitley of Salon Image won the award for “Most Unusual Chili.”  The “Fire Award” went to Kirk Ellingson and Wave Broadband, while the Associated Students of Sierra College won the “Police Award.”
