The 16-month conflict between the City of Auburn and Ernest Shih, once its $80,000-a-year information technology chief and employee of the year, has ended, but neither party is out celebrating.
The official announcement of the settlement came this week in a
two-sentence statement from Shih and the city’s lawyer, Carl L.
Fessenden:
“The City of Auburn and Ernest Shih have agreed to resolve all claims
between them. Although both parties believe strongly in their
positions, the mutual decision was made that it is in the best
interests of all to put this matter behind them.”
Auburn authorities had Shih arrested in May 2006 and jailed on
embezzlement and gun possession charges. He was placed on paid
administrative leave, with his salary and benefits continuing through
the middle of last month.
A few months ago the Placer County District Attorney’s office refused
to prosecute the case on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
A report in the Sacramento Bee said Shih accepted a final settlement of
$30,000. Asked about that figure, Shih said, “That’s (City Manager Bob)
Richardson saying that. I cannot talk about it.”
Shih said he’s “glad the ordeal is over,” adding that he’s looking for a job with which he can support his family.
