STAY SEATED – County CEO Tom Miller was the guest speaker at Meddlers early Tuesday morning and he did his darnedest to put to rest rumors that Roseville will become the new “virtual” seat of Placer County. “We have no plans to move out of DeWitt or the Domes,” he told the gathering. “There will be new facilities to the west, but there is no effort to move the county seat.” Placer County Supervisors Jim Holmes and Bruce Kranz, who were at Meddlers, seemed to agree. “It’ll never happen,” Kranz said.

AROUND TOWN– Well, it was another busy week in the foothills. Since I penned my last column, I attended the Granite Community Bank quarterly forum on Wednesday, the Art Walk and Placer County Job Fair on Thursday and the Auburn Wine Festival on Saturday. While I was out of town for most of Sunday’s Placer County Farm and Barn Tour, Sentinel Food Editor Rachel Chaddock spent the day at the Flower Farm Nursery and snapped some great photos (and took notes) for this week’s fish wrapper. ... The area’s top cops spoke to the gathering at The Ridge on Wednesday. Placer County Assistant Sheriff Devon Bell, referring to the recent news story in which a Roseville Police officer let an off-duty Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy off the hook despite reportedly failing a DUI test and the allegations that a Colfax-based deputy had unlawful sexual relations with a minor, said “I’ve certainly had better weeks. When something happens in the Sheriff’s office, it affects everyone (in law enforcement). We all hurt when these mistakes are made.” Bell went on to say that the public deserves excellence. Capt. Rick Ward, of the California Highway Patrol, quickly dispelled the myth that the tickets written by his officers fund the CHP. “We get not one dime from the tickets we write,” he said. The fines paid go to the cities and counties in which the citations were written. Auburn Police Chief Valerie Harris echoed Bell’s comments. “We all feel responsible and take it to heart when there is bad press. We have to be professional. We should all have pride when in our uniforms.” Some of those I spotted at the luncheon included Loomis Mayor Tom Milward, Roseville Mayor Jim Gray, Roseville City Council member Carol Garcia, Auburn City Council members Mike Holmes, Auburn Mayor Bob Snyder, incoming Auburn Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Eklund, Loomis Town Councilman Russ Kelley, former Auburn Mayor Kathy Sands, Placer County Assessor Bruce Dear and Rocklin City Council member Brett Storey. ... I see the Gold Country Mall in Downtown Auburn is sporting a spiffy new burgundy awning. ... PlacerArts Executive Director Angela Tahti was in a real rush last Thursday, but it wasn’t due to the Art Walk. Tahti was on her way to the airport to attend her sister’s wedding in New York. Speaking of the Art Walk, the threat of rain kept many from attending the final walk of the season. Too bad, because it was a nice evening with some great pieces. They will still be hanging in the venues for next few months, so go in and see them for yourself. At Latitudes Restaurant, co-owner Pete Enochs held a sausage tasting to go along with all the art. ... On Thursday night at Carpe Vino in Old Town Auburn, Gary Moffat unveiled his latest endeavor – a short film highlighting Mt. Vernon Winery. I spotted Jack “Kung Fu Grip” Arns, Auburn Vice Mayor Keith Nesbitt and Perspectives magazine editor John McCreadie at the screening. ... Saturday’s Wine Festival was a real success. Special thanks to Jim Bril, Rebecca Toedter and Teri Gibson for all their hard work at the last minute to make sure the event came off without a hitch. I spotted KAHI’s Dave Rosenthal, Auburn City Council member Bridget Powers, Monique “Mo” Krafft, Becky Martin, Placer Community Foundation’s Veronica Blake, school board member Shana Fain McDonald, Auburn Chamber of Commerce President Steve Galyardt, Leslie Maita, Doris Viera, Club Car owners Marcello and Sarah Nolivo, Cabin Fever’s Patti Henderson, Oz! Gallery’s Catherine Rowe, Auburn City Manager Bob Richardson and his better half Jennifer, Lynn and Ross Carpenter, Drooling Dog BarBQ’s Linda Mason, Auburn Alehouse Chef Luis Gomez, Old Town Pizza’s Reese and Tammy Browning, Enid Baldock, Tina May-Clarke and Peggy Seitzinger. ... Rachel, while volunteering at the Flower Farm Nursery in Loomis on Sunday for the Farm and Barn Tour, tells me she saw plenty of folks enjoying the event, including Karen Grunwald and Bob and Stephanie Snyder.

BUSINESS BEAT – It looks like Joe Caribé’s Caribbean to Go eatery is open for business near Pistol Pete’s. ... Speaking of Pete Aroz, he has been hard at work painting his building and expanding the interior of the Liquor Outlet in Auburn. ... Am I the only one hearing the rumor that the local wineries are looking at opening a tasting room in Auburn? I hear the group tasting room would help supplement the wine tastings they currently offer on-site, but those in the know say there are a lot of details to be worked out and nothing is finalized. ... The Golden Swann in Downtown Auburn is hosting an open house on Friday, Oct. 19th from 4 to 8 p.m. Be sure to drop in and pay them a visit.

WHAT’S HAPPENING – Big pumpkins, tasty food and kids in costumes will be showcased at the Auburn Community Festival on Saturday at Recreation Park.

WISHING WELL – A couple of local news hounds are on the mend. Local columnist Jim Ruffalo suffered a mild stroke, but I’m sure he’ll be back “behind the scenes” soon. Meanwhile, Auburn Journal Managing Editor Kristine Coman has been resting at home and is scheduled to return to her desk Oct. 29th. ... Be sure to wish a happy birthday to local attorney Ross Kochenderfer (Oct. 14) and a happy anniversary as well. Ross and his wife Tracy celebrated their years of wedded bliss on Oct. 16. Dick Shepherd and his wife Hedda celebrated their anniversary on Oct. 15 (and Dick also turned a year older on Oct. 7).
