Hidden History

The women’s jail cell is located underneath the stairs at the historic Placer County Courthouse in Old Town Auburn. Now a museum exhibit, the cell was once used to segregate female inmates from the male jail population. Admission to the Placer County Courthouse Museum is free, but donations are welcome. The museum’s gift shop, which also serves as a visitor center, features the county’s gold display as well as books on local subjects and more. Photo by Don Chaddock.
