Wine, Vets & Business Shuffle

AROUND TOWN –The Veteran’s Day Parade was a well-attended affair on Sunday with hundreds turning out to show their support. When the Clock Tower struck high noon (which was 11 a.m. in the real world), there was a fly-over, a 21-gun salute and “Taps” was played. The weather certainly cooperated as threatening storm clouds kept their distance. Marching with the honor guard that day was Nick Santini, who is home on leave from the Middle East. He has received two Purple Heart awards and is stationed at 29 Palms. As always, retired Sgt. Major Terry Crousen did a bang-up job leading the group of vets and active military. Some of those in attendance included Auburn City Council member Bridget Powers, KAHI’s Dave Rosenthal on the microphone at the KAHI van announcing the parade, former Auburn Mayor Bud Pisarek, Old Town Business Association President Ty Rowe with his three children, Auburn Police Sgt. Dave Lawicka directing traffic, Ralph Roper driving one of his antique vehicles, Placer County District 3 Supervisor Jim Holmes riding in a car and waving to the crowd with his older brother (as well as an Auburn City Councilmember) Mike Holmes, and many others.  ...

Auburn’s John and Helen Power have been visiting Texas but are expected to return this week. Be sure to give them a warm welcome when you next see them. ... With the future of Placer County wine tasting up in the air, some of the wineries have banded together to open off-site tasting rooms. One will be located next to Lou La Bonte’s on Lincoln Way (dubbed The Wine Rack due to open in December) and the other, which was reported in the Sentinel weeks ago in this column as a possibility, should be going into the soon-to-be-vacant rug shop near the Clock Tower. They should be welcome with open arms. ... Michelle Strange, manager of Citizens Bank in Downtown Auburn, was recently in Florida for her brother-in-law’s funeral. Welcome back, Michelle, and we’re sorry for your family’s loss. ... The lovely Kristina Hodge is moving Cattail Flowers to 665 High Street (in the Livingston Building). That will open up her current spot to another business.

GIVING THANKS – Once again, the Salvation Army of Auburn’s Thanksgiving Day dinner will be held at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. It is a free community dinner and volunteers are always welcome. For the scoop, give Social Services Manager Michelle Talbott a call at 530-889-3990.

RADIO DAZE – KAHI AM 950 radio, based in Auburn at the State Theater building on Lincoln Way, turned 50 years old this year and they celebrated last Tuesday with a big birthday bash. All the familiar faces were there including two former Auburn mayors (Hank Gonzales and Cheryl Maki), Don and Chere Yamasaki, Dr. Bill Kirby, Jerry Kopp, Mary Jane Popp, Barry Stigers, Victoria Beninga, Jerry Henry, Rebecca Toedter and plenty of others. One of the special guests included Jimmy Jay, host of the popular “Rewind” show, who flew in from Boston to host his show live from KAHI’s “palatial” studios (as Dave Rosenthal refers to them). Jimmy told me that he loves his job and the show. “This is my life’s dream,” he said. “I always wanted to host my own show.” Later, on air, he said, “This is a great honor for me to host ‘Rewind’ here in Auburn.” Hopefully, Jimmy didn’t drive a car to the studios, as the city’s parking lady, Nadine Carini, was out with a ticket pad threatening to cite the classic cars parked in front of the studios. Even the colorful KAHI van didn’t get a pass. General Manager Jerry Henry managed to grab the keys and darted across the street to move the van in the nick of time. Another interesting bit was the Auburn Police officer who parked across the street in the Big O Tires parking lot and used a radar gun to target speeders on that short stretch of Lincoln Way. I wasn’t aware that was a heavy speeding area, but I know that Auburn Folsom Road and High Street (between Lincoln Way and Auburn Folsom Road) should be the officer’s next targets.

SENTINEL HAPPENINGS – Roberta Lopez-Hoskins will be coming on board the Sentinel to serve Lincoln, Rocklin, Loomis and Roseville areas as an advertising representative. Welcome aboard, Roberta. ... I do a regular Sentinel guest spot with Dave Rosenthal and the Afternoon Report on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. on AM 950. Be sure to tune in.
