Pro-environment Republicans rolled up their sleeves this week and went to work on getting Auburn’s Mike Holmes elected to Congress. Top officials of Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP) were in Auburn Tuesday to announce their national grassroots organization’s support of Holmes to replace nine-term incumbent John Doolittle as the Republican member of the House of Representatives from California’s 4th Congressional District.
Auburn Councilman Mikes Holmes, right, stood on the steps of the Historic Placer County Courthouse as top officials of Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP) announced their organization’s support for his candidacy in the 4th Congressional District. Speaking at left was Buddy Burke, REP’s state president, while Martha Marks, national president of REP, listened. Holding a “Mike Holmes for Congress“ sign in the rear was Herb Grounds of Auburn. |
“We are thrilled to endorse Mike Holmes,” enthused Buddy Burke of
Walnut Creek, REP’s state president. “He’s a perfect fit for the 4th
C.D. He understands that conservation is conservative and he’ll be a
great steward of our natural resources.” Martha Marks, REP’s
national president, came from Santa Fe NM to praise Holmes, an Auburn
city councilman, former mayor and decorated Vietnam War veteran. She
stressed Holmes’s commitment to conservation-minded policies aimed at
decreasing the nation’s risky overdependence on oil while promoting
better management of natural resources. “Mike Holmes understands
the need for clean domestic energy technologies that can reduce our
dependence on oil,” she declared. “And he recognizes the important role
the 4th District’s natural bounty plays in the quality of life of
district residents. He supports responsible policies to sustain those
resources.” In a press release that she distributed before
speaking, Marks took some shots at incumbent Doolittle, whom she
described as “the poster child for special-interest influence peddling.” She
added, “In 2006, it was the ethical lapses of a few that tarnished the
Republican brand and cost us control of Congress. Our party must clean
house of people who put self-interest and politics above responsible
public service.” In accepting REP’s backing, Holmes, a retired
U.S. Navy captain, Auburn native son and member of the Placer County
Air Pollution Control District, noted that the 4th C.D. “has many
eco-systems stretching from the floor of the Sacramento Valley to the
peaks of the Sierra and from Lake Tahoe to the high desert country near
the Oregon border.” “We must continue to improve the quality of air and water in the district and elsewhere,” he stated. REP’s
national office is located at 3200 Carlisle Boulevard NE, Suite 228,
Albuquerque NM 87110. Its web site address is www.rep.org.
