'Sopranos' Star Proclaims Newcastle Restaurant as Good as New York

A ‘SOPRANO’ COMES TO NEWCASTLE – Actor Joseph Gannascoli, who played Vito on the hit TV series “Sopranos," paid a visit to our area recently to promote his new cook book and, much to my surprise, speak very highly of a restaurant in Newcastle. While being interviewed on Good Day Sacramento, the actor (who is also a chef) said he stopped by La Fornaretta in Newcastle two days in a row and had fantastic meals. So good, in fact, that he invited one of the restaurant owners (Suzanne Di Lorenzo) to come on Good Day Sacramento with him. The two did a cooking segment and the recipe is posted on www.cw31.com. Gannascoli said La Fornaretta’s food was as good as he’d get back in New York (and he said it was much better than what he’d recently eaten in Fresno). The dining establishment, billed as an authentic Sicilian restaurant and pizzeria, is owned by Suzanne and her husband, Cesare. You can find the eatery at 455 Main Street #4 and online at www.lafornaretta.net.

ARTISTIC LICENSE – Stop by for a latté and view some of the watercolors of local artist Marilyn Heyman at JD’s Bakery and Sandwich Shop in Rocklin. The eatery is located at the corner of Midas and Pacific streets. The show will be going on through January 15th.

FAREWELL, CORA – Cora Zevalkink, the lovely lady who always had a smile, passed away on Saturday after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Known around town as Cora “Z,” the real estate professional was also an Auburn Chamber Ambassador and up until about a year ago, she attended most ribbon cuttings. Our condolences go out to her husband, Ron, and the rest of her family.

WELCOME TO TOWN? – A number of businesses along High Street in Auburn had their mailboxes broken into and items stolen (including checks) over the Thanksgiving weekend. Some folks showed up for work and found mail, ripped open, strewn about their lawns and porches. To make matters worse, some of the victims were new businesses. What a way to welcome folks to town! Keep your eyes peeled for the mail bandits and report suspicious activity to the Auburn Police Department.

AROUND TOWN – While Rachel and I spent the holiday weekend with family in Carson City, NV, Brenda Roper (of Roper’s Jewelers) took a much longer trip. She spent the holiday in New York where she watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Welcome back, Brenda. We missed you.

La Fornaretta was pretty good at a recent lunch visit.

Even though its "cheap" by New York or LA standards (it was in South Pasadena from 1996 to 2007), I think their pricing is rather steep from an Auburn or Sacramento perspective (for lunches anyway). Dinner pricing seems very reasonable and I'd like to go back for the linguini with steamed clams.

I think the bread is to die for, and they keep bringing you unlimited quantities.....which makes the lunches worth the price.

I'm not used to spending $12 a plate for lunch, but if its at a place like La Fornaretta, I'll splurge!!!
