Supervisors approve east coast junket

Three Placer County supervisors will be going to Drexel University in Philadelphia next week to talk about the university possibly establishing a 6,000-student campus west of Roseville.

The trio – Supervisor Chairman Jim Holmes, and supervisors F. C. “Rocky” Rockholm and Robert Weygandt — also will follow up on a county-approved strategy to try to attract new business to locate in the county, and then go on to Washington, D.C. to meet with federal government officials to discuss legislative and regulatory issues affecting the county.

The board routinely authorized the trip to Drexel on Tuesday without comment.  The three supervisors will be in Philadelphia for two days next week and in Washington for another two days from Feb. 13 to 15.

Last October, a 41-member Drexel delegation met with county officials, local businesses and community leaders to talk about the university establishing the campus west of Roseville.  There has been little discussion of what progress has been made in the university plan.

The supervisors want to discuss with federal officials the continued funding for transportation, funding for Wildfire Protection, financial support for Placer Legacy, the county conservation plan, the Sub Regional Wastewater Treatment and Water Reclamation Facility and the Public Safety Communications Network needs.

County Executive Tom M. Miller said the cost of the trip is approximately $6,800 which was budgeted in the 2007-08 budget.

In another matter, Supervisor Bruce Kranz had high praise for the county’s sheriff’s rescue unit in finding and rescuing two San Francisco skiers who survived two days in a wild area near the Hell Hole Reservoir.

The supervisors also approved a resolution requesting the California State Legislature introduce and support legislation that would authorize the supervisors to ban alcohol during specific periods on the Truckee River.

According to Miller, alcohol-related misconduct and associated public health, safety and environmental degradation issues on the river from Tahoe City to Alpine Meadows Road over the Fourth of July holiday period have significantly increased.
